Fatal fire in Elgin, 1-21-18

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Elgin firefighters called to a home in the 400 block of Sadler Avenue about 6:40 p.m. Sunday found heavy smoke upon arrival. Initial reports indicated two people were in the mobile home but it was determined the second resident was not home at the time.

A man found by firefighters searching the house  was transported to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead. The Kane County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death. Two dogs perished in the fire.

The fire was ruled accidental after officials determined that heat tape being used to prevent pipes from freezing overheated. Elgin fire investigators received assistance from investigators from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Damage to the mobile home was estimated at $30,000, with additional losses to personal property.

Fatal fire in Addison, 1-22-18

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

Addison firefighters responded at 2:27 a.m. to a report from a bystander of a fire in the 700 block of South Ellsworth and found the blaze in a one-story, single-family home. Parts of the roof and ceiling had collapsed and crews could not enter areas of the home due to the fire’s large volume. No operating smoke detectors were heard inside the home.

Two people were found dead in one of the home’s rooms, and had not been identified Monday morning.

The Addison Police and Fire Protection District arson investigators, as well as the State Fire Marshall, are investigating the cause of the fire.

This from Dave Weaver:

1/20/18 GRAND DETOUR – Plane Crashes onto Frozen Rock River after Downing Power Line; Fox Lake FPD Airboat Responds to Assist Dixon Rural FPD on Interdivisional Box Alarm – Video by Dave Weaver
LIVE NEWS MONITORING:
DETAILS: At 12:36 PM on Saturday, January 20, a pilot struck a power line before crash landing onto the frozen Rock River in Grand Detour, IL near the border of Lee and Ogle counties, north of Dixon. The Dixon Rural Fire Prot. Dist., which is in MABAS Division 18 (Ogle County) requested the specialized assistance of an airboat from the Fox Lake Fire Prot. Dist. The Fox Lake FPD is in MABAS Division 4 (Lake County). The airboat crew helped ComEd workers assess the damaged power line which was entangled with the aircraft. The airboat crew also helped with the recovery of the damaged aircraft which was tugged to shore by cable. Because of the unique nature of Fox Lake’s airboat, and their crews’ familiarity with ice incidents, their specialized asset and operational skills helped bring this incident to a safe, efficient conclusion.

New ambulance for Robbins

Excerpts from the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association Facebook page:

On Tuesday, Shaun McCabe from my 17th District office joined Chief Michael Schofield of the Orland Fire Protection District as his department dedicated a recently retired ambulance to the Village of Robbins Fire Department.

Once again, this kind of intergovernmental cooperation is what’s needed throughout our area. The ability for one fire department to provide assistance by dedicating vehicles and equipment to another fire department with lesser financial resources is a program that can and should be modeled by others.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

As many as a dozen Chicago firefighters are facing disciplinary action for allegedly looking the other way while a colleague had sex with a woman at a South Side firehouse.

The firefighter accused of engaging in sex — with a woman who was his girlfriend at the time — is facing either a lengthy suspension or termination.

The other firefighters, some of whom have already retired, stand accused of varying degrees of not paying attention or looking the other way, sources said. They either knew or should have known that the hanky-panky was going on.

“Following the allegations of improper activity in a firehouse, an internal investigation was immediately opened. The investigation was completed on January 17, following the complete review of all evidence and nearly two dozen interviews, and the accused has been served charges. CFD Labor Division is finalizing the charges and will be issuing findings soon.”

To verify the woman’s claims, Internal Affairs interviewed nearly two dozen firefighters, and went through telephone and text messages provided by the woman. Firehouse sex is strictly off-limits. In addition, no visitors are allowed in Chicago firehouses after 10 p.m.
