Prospect Heights FPD history

This from Drew Smith:

I thought I’d share some history of Prospect Heights tankers. Before the decommissioning of the 1994 Spartan/S&S tanker, Prospect Heights operated a 1968 Ford/Darley tanker. That tanker had a Darley two-stage 750 GPM pump and a 1500 gallon tank. In 1989 that tanker was sent to Monroe Truck where a new, 1500 gallon wet-side tank was installed. Prior to the new tank, Darley overhauled and rebuilt the pump. After delivery from Monroe Truck, members of the PHFD plumbed crosslays and installed new warning lights and had a local provider apply graphics. That tanker served a total of 26 here at the PHFD. It was then sold to the Mountain, WI FD where it served several more years. It is currently owned by Michael Zahnen, owner of The Zahnen Companies in Michigan, a Spartan EV dealer. Mike was also a member of the PHFD more than 30-plus years ago.

Vintage Chicago fire scene photos with Snorkels at work

This from Eric Haak:

For this week I thought I would offer a bunch of Snorkel images and one Autocar. Image 1 is from a 2-11 at 4440 W. Madison on September 23, 1959. The building to the right is still there but the rest of it is all gone. Image 2 shows an Autocar working at a 2-11 at 4615 S. Wells on October 5, 1959. This was during the pre-Dan Ryan days and Wentworth Avenue can be seen in the background. Image 3 is interesting because this fire was just outside of Engine 48’s quarters at 3950 S Dearborn. It was a 5-11 on October 11, 1959. For those who are familiar with Engine 16’s old house on Dearborn (same house), you can see the bottom of the railroad bridge at the top of the image, so this was literally right outside of 48’s apron. Image 4 is from a 3-11 at 4314 S Cottage Grove on February 8, 1961 showing Snorkels 1 and 2 working together. Image 5 again shows Snorkels 2 and 3 working together at a 4-11 bowling alley fire on March 27, 1961. The address was 3818 W 26th St. Finally there is an image of a 4-11 from August 17, 1967. This building was on the northeast corner of Wentworth and Cullerton and was the International Heater Company supply warehouse. Happy Thanksgiving to all!”

Morris Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the morrisherald-news.com:

The Morris Fire & Protection District will be seeking a tax increase on the March 20, 2018 general election. The district approved unanimously on Nov. 16 a measure to place a referendum on the ballot to impove ambulance service for residents and visitors to the district.

If the referendum passes. it would increase the maximum ambulance tax rate for the district from 10 cents per $100 to 35 cents per $100. If the district levied the full amount available, the owner of a $100,000 home who is currently paying $3 for the service would see an increase of approximately $7 per month in ambulance service taxes.

“The district has taken a very fiscally responsible approach to budgeting and the trustees will continue this effort,” Board President Dave Bonomo said. “To meet the needs of our District taxpayers and provide outstanding ambulance and fire response we are asking for our first-rate increase in 25 years.”

The district would take the maximum increase and purchase another ambulance while the additional funds will be used to replace the 72-year-old downtown fire station. The district has a capital fund for building replacement that currently has a balance of $1.6 million dollars. The estimated cost of replacement is $2.75 to $3 million dollars.

The district serves approximately 22,000 residents across 140 square miles in Grundy County.

The board determined that the district needs to expand its advanced life support (ALS) ambulance coverage to district residents due to the continued increase of emergency medical calls. To increase ALS coverage, the district would add a third ambulance to its current fleet available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The district has been operating on the current tax rate since 1992 and feels it needs this increase to provide the needed services for the increase in calls and an aging population. If a majority of voters in the district approve, the district would be permitted to increase its ambulance levy up to a maximum of 35 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation.

In addition to the expanded ALS ambulance coverage, the district also plans to use the increased tax revenue to replace aging emergency vehicles and to retain trained personnel.

Wauconda Fire District news

Excerpts from there DailyHerald.com:

Wauconda Fire District Chief Mike Wahl is retiring after nearly 34 years with the department. He is stepping down effective Jan. 1, though a traditional walkout ceremony is planned for Dec. 15, his last day on the job.

He joined the department as a firefighter-paramedic in May 1984 and rose through the ranks. He’s been fire chief since 2015. Wahl also has served as Wauconda’s emergency management agency director, and he’s served on Illinois’ emergency services management and incident management teams, among other responsibilities.

The fire district board has selected David Geary, the agency’s business manager, to succeed Wahl. He joined the district in 1978 as a firefighter-paramedic and stayed on staff until 1990. He returned to the district in 2012 as business manager, a post with financial and administrative duties. Geary will be sworn in as the new chief Dec. 21.
