Excerpts from wspynews.com:
A 17 year-old girl from Pingree Grove was killed and five other teens were hospitalized after authorities say distracted driving may have played a role in a two-vehicle crash near Hampshire on Thursday night.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office says 17 year-old Brianna Soto, who was the driver of one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at Centegra Hospital in Huntley.
Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Dietrich Rd. between Rt. 20 and Brier Hill Rd. around 8:20 p.m. to investigate the crash.
In a news release, Kane County Sheriff’s spokesperson Pat Gengler says Soto and another 17 year-old female from Pingree Grove were headed east on Dietrich Rd., about to go over the crest of a hill where their vehicle crossed the center line and went partially into the westbound lane of traffic.
Three 16 year-old females of Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, and Hampshire, respectively, and one 15 year-old female from Huntley were headed west in an SUV.
Gengler says both the SUV and the vehicle being driven by Soto rolled over. The four teens in the SUV and the 17 year-old in Soto’s vehicle were treated at Sherman Hospital in Elgin for non-life-threatening injuries.
Kane County Sheriff’s Detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the crash. Gengler says all subjects were wearing their seatbelts.
