Excerpts from Cincinnati.com:
A veteran fire chief from Illinois beat out 30 other candidates to become the new head of Newport’s fire department (OH). The Newport City Commission swore in Bill Darin, of East Peoria, Ill., this week as fire chief.
Firefighting is part of Darin’s heritage. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were firefighters. In addition, four uncles and a brother worked as firefighters.
His son works for the Louisville Fire Department. That’s why his attention turned to Kentucky after more than 40 years fighting fires, including 30 years as a fire chief in Illinois. He wants to be closer to family.
Darin served as fire chief of Batavia, Illinois for 27 years before becoming fire chief for East Peoria in 2009, where he served for six years.
Newport’s previous fire chief, Gary Auffart, left in December to become fire chief in Fort Mitchell. Newport is a full-time fire department with 37 firefighters. The fire chief salary starts at $96,000 a year.
thanks Drew

This from Eric Haak:
These images were taken on April 23rd at a house fire at 67th and Indiana. It was a bedroom fire that was out before I could make it down the block, but I did get a few interesting shots that I thought I would share here.

This from the Wheeling Fire Department:
Around 1:45 on Thursday, June 16, 2016, Wheeling and mutual aid units were dispatched for the Code 4 structure fire on Walnut Ave in Wheeling. Wheeling’s new Rosenbauer engine and truck took in the fire. Truck 24 is not yet in service, but companies were on the road doing driver training. Engine 23 was the attack engine and had three lines off. Companies had a well-involved attic fire. Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Prospect Heights Tower 9, Lincolnshire Ambulance 52, and Northbrook Engine 11 assisted Wheeling companies.

From the IllinoisFireSafetyAlliance.com:
From June 19-25, 2016, approximately 70 burn-injured children will attend the 26th annual Camp “I Am Me” in Ingleside, Illinois. The burn camp, which is organized by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) and hosted at YMCA Camp Duncan, provides burn survivors between the ages of eight and 16 with typical camp activities as well as special activities that deal with the specific needs of burn survivors. And although the cost to send one child to camp is $2,400, the camp is provided free of charge to the campers thanks to the generosity of donors.
“These children are burned due to various circumstances, such as scalding water, chemicals, fire, or electricity. Unfortunately, they only represent a small portion of the hundreds of Illinois children that are burned each year, but we continuously work with the hospital burn units to create awareness and reach more children. Our goal is to give this free opportunity to every burn-injured child in Illinois.”
In addition to having fun with the usual camp activities, the young burn survivors attend activities that include character development, journaling and therapeutic sessions.. These activities occur in a nonjudgmental environment that allows them to learn from themselves and others, discovering new ways to heal and build self-esteem. These are resources and outlets that some campers do not have in their own communities.
“Many kids think they are all alone in their recovery from a burn. They may be teased by others in their hometowns because of their burn scars — scars which may be both physical and emotional,” notes Zaleski. “But camp helps shows these children they are not alone and they don’t have to be afraid to be themselves. It tends to have a positive and lasting impact on young burn survivors’ lives.”
In fact, over one-third of camp volunteers each year are former campers. In addition, members of the fire service and medical community, as well as educators and members of the private sector, volunteer their time for a total of nearly one volunteer for each camper.
On Wednesday, June 22, guests are welcome to attend Appreciation Day that will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a fire apparatus parade, signaled by the blare of sirens from fire trucks and equipment from throughout the state arriving at camp. The parade will be followed by lunch at noon and a ceremony at 1:00 p.m. to thank donors, supporters and volunteers. Later in the day, campers will enjoy the Fun Fair, which features carnival games, face painting, dunk tanks, bounce houses, prizes and more.

Buffalo Grove police and firefighters were called to the scene of a two-car MVA on Weiland Road just north of Deerfield Parkway Wednesday at noon. Both drivers were injured. Damage to the driver’s side of the sedan hampered access to remove the patient and a pin-in response was requested. Two engines, two ambulances, and Battalion 4 were at the crash site in addition to several police officers. One patient was transported to Northwest Community Hospital and the other went to Condell Hospital.

Excerpts from the NWITimes.com:
Millions of dollars worth of improvements may be made at the Gary Fire Department over the next year. They recently bought some new ambulances and officials hope over the next year to add several new engines and an aerial ladder to the inventory, according to Fire Chief Paul Bradley.
The department recently received a $758,044 grant that will be used to buy 133 self-contained breathing apparatus devices.
The money came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance of Firefighters Grant program. Bradley said the city is also seeking another grant from that program to buy a new ladder truck, which can cost between $700,000 and $1 million. The department currently has three trucks in service while one is being overhauled.
Equipment and personnel shortages have been an issue for some time, but things seem to be improving, according to some observers.
In December 2010, under the administration of former Mayor Rudy Clay, 35 positions were eliminated in the fire department, which went from 236 to 201 firefighters. Firefighters joined police officers in 2014 and again early last year in picketing over inadequate equipment and salaries, which was said to be responsible for personnel leaving for other departments that paid more money.
The city now has 187 firefighters, but raises were approved last year and Firefighter Adam Friday, vice president of Gary Firefighters Association Local 359, believes things are improving. In addition to raises that are expected to eventually increase annual salaries by $10,000, Friday said equipment has gotten a lot better.
When Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson came into office “there were some large gaps with equipment. They (the firefighters) were grossly underpaid. So every year we’ve worked with the chiefs to find more dollars. But they have also been very active in finding dollars for themselves,” she said.
For instance, a new company is doing a better job now of collecting fees for ambulance service. The money collected is being used to help get new ambulances.
One of the issues still remaining, according to Friday, is a new fire station to permanently house Station 5 firefighters, who have been working out of temporary quarters for the last several years. Bradley said the city has been approved for federal assistance for a new fire station that will be located in the 4900 block of Pennsylvania Street and he hopes to break ground this year. Bradley also said he has improved furnishing at the stations.
Friday said another issue the union and administration are working on has to do with obtaining additional personal protective equipment and additional cleaners for that gear. The equipment helps protect firefighters against hazardous chemical.
Freeman-Wilson also is working with department heads, union officials, and the council to create public safety positions. These employees would be trained to perform both police and firefighting duties to some degree. Bradley and Freeman-Wilson said it will be up to employees to decide whether they want to apply for these positions. Bradley said some firefighters have expressed interest in the positions. In addition to paying a higher salary, Bradley said employees might be attracted to the position because of the opportunity to learn new skills.
thanks Dennis
