I would bet that the majority of the out of service rigs are out due to emissions issues. California has the most stringent EPA emissions standards in the United States. The EPA shoved these standards down the engine manufacturers throats. Prior to the implementation of the 2007 EPA standards, the engine manufacturers were building some of the best and most reliable engines with great horsepower and fuel economy. Now we have very unreliable engines that require DEF and need to Regen multiple times a week. If someone could explain how this helps us. And the cost it has added to all diesel vehicles plus the maintenance and downtime.

Keep in mind that a 20 year LA rig is not the same as a 20 year old Chicago rig. La rigs aren’t rottted out and ready for the crusher like ours are.

LAFD has an apparatus replacement program. the apparatus out of service is about 15% of their entire rolling stock. Rigs needs have failures and need PM’s so its not really anything to get upset about. Regarding Ukraine, those rigs reached their useful life span. That’s why they were donated, either donate them or send them to scrap. Those donated pieces would not have helped because they would have needed staffing. LAFD reported at the time of this incident that no front line apparatus were unstaffed or browned out. This fire did what it did because of 100mph winds and the massive need for water.

Looking at their apparatus list, they have a lot of 20 year old rigs. Again, every major city should have a Capital Replacement Program. Chicago and LA clearly do not have those programs.

Why can’t cities make sure that their police and fire departments have what they need to do their jobs and protect the public? They interviewed this guy who lost his house. He recalls growing up in the 80’s they had enough fire equipment to pre position rigs at the end of every street.
Not anymore, if they were truly short 100 rigs, that’s unacceptable! I know they have been receiving new rigs, obviously not fast enough. Also, they need to hire more mechanics.

It doesn’t help matters that the gave a bunch of equipment to Ukraine. Very sad what’s going on out there but people get the govt. they deserve. So much for charity begging at home.
