So, is there a reason why Niles has as many reserve rigs as they do front-line rigs? With only two stations, seems like too much.

This is just a guess. The rig that Eng 2 has now was originally going to Eng 3. If you look at photos of the 2 engines the lettering is a little different. I wonder if they forget to change the lettering when they ordered the 2nd rig?

Thanks for the information Mabas Guy.
Joe you make a good point about Engine 3 not getting assigned the new rig as Engine 2’s 2013 rig is barely three years old. The way that Niles is laid out, Station 2 is sandwiched in between North Maine Station 1, Park Ridge Station 36, and Morton Grove Station 5. Niles has automatic aide agreements with North Maine and Morton Grove so Niles Tower 2 responds as the first due truck in both districts. They don’t however have the same agreement with Park Ridge. Lutheran General Hospital is only a few blocks west of Niles Station 2 but located on the south side of Dempster which is in Park Ridge. Niles isn’t first due on the still alarm even though they are the closest fire station. If a fire is upgraded to a Code 4, then Niles Engine 2 is the third engine due after Park Ridge and North Maine. Niles Tower 2 isn’t due at all to the hospital. Park Ridge has Des Plaines Tower 61 as the second due truck instead. The Niles truck isn’t due there at all.
Phoenix Arizona has a much more comprehensive system where most of the fire departments in the Phoenix metro area have a unified dispatch system and the nearest fire companies are always sent regardless of the town bouderies.

When Niles reassigned the former 2013 Engine 2, was the apparatus relettered to match the new Engine 2 and Tower? I’m also surprised that they are still running a 2001 Chevy for the Battalion Chief’s vehicle.

I don’t know enough about them either. But it does sound like “first in first out” where the oldest rigs get assigned to lesser duty and finally reserve or spare.

Currently, according to this site, Niles engine 2 is a 2013 Pierce Dash CF PUC 1500/500/25/25. Even their spare (2R) is a 2001 Pierce Saber 1250/500/30. Seems both of those rigs are too new to be replaced. However, their engine 3 is a 1996 Pierce Saber 1250/500, so this may be a hand me down situation. Although, I’m somewhat doubting the info on the site if the 1996 is still running in front line service while the 2001 is a spare. I don’t know enough about Niles to say what the actual situation is though. Does engine 3 not get enough runs to justify getting them their own new rig?
