Fire Chief James Dominik to Retire
After 29 years with the Wilmette Fire Department – eight of them as fire chief, Jim Dominik has announced his retirement. Dominik’s last day as fire chief will be January 2, 2015.
Dominik joined the Wilmette Fire Department in 1985 as a firefighter/paramedic and steadily advanced through the ranks. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1990, Duty Chief in 1994, Deputy Chief in 1997, and finally Chief in 2006. As Chief, Dominik was responsible for managing daily operations for the department’s 50 employees and two fire stations.
Under Dominik’s leadership, the Wilmette Fire Department remodeled both of its Fire Stations, retained its Accreditation through the Center for Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), improved its Insurance Services Officer (ISO) rating from a 4 to a 2, implemented a high-rise sprinkler compliance plan and new single-family residential sprinkler ordinance, and championed numerous fire prevention causes to ensure the safety of Wilmette residents. In 2010, Chief Dominik received the Achievement Award from the Fire Inspectors Association for his tireless fire prevention work.
He also served as Vice President of the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA), as an Accreditation Peer Assessor for the Center for Public Safety Excellence, a member of the Wilmette Rotary Club, and worked closely with The Regional Emergency Dispatch Center and The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to ensure that Wilmette was working closely with its regional partners to most effectively utilize resources.
thanks Max
