New fire chief in Crystal Lake

The Northwest Herald has an article about a new fire chief in Crystal Lake and ratification of anew contract for firefighters:

Crystal Lake city officials ratified a new four-year collective bargaining agreement with the city’s fire department on the same day it officially swore in a new chief.

Moments after longtime Crystal Lake firefighter Paul DeRaedt was sworn in Tuesday as the new chief, the city council approved a four-year deal with the department that includes a roughly 7 percent increase to salaries over the life of the deal.

Salary ranges for firefighter/paramedics will range from $60,249 a year to $88,899 a year in 2014-15 before increasing to a floor of $64,591 and a ceiling of $95,306 in 2018. Lieutenants will see their maximum earning power increase from $101,990 in 2014 to $109,341 in 2018. The increase to each level occurs every six months. The agreement also included many of the previous provisions about the 24-hour work shift, education reimbursements, no strike clauses and overtime policies.

DeRaedt takes over for James Moore, who announced his retirement in June. Moore had served as chief of the fire department since 2005 with DeRaedt in the deputy role for eight of those years.

Gurnee receives federal grant

The Daily Herald has an article about the Gurnee Fire Department receiving a federal grant:

Gurnee [was awarded] a federal grant toward the purchase of upgraded safety equipment for firefighters.

Deputy Fire Chief John Kavanagh said the promised federal money will allow the village to replace 14-year-old air packs. “We would not be able to make the purchase without this grant being awarded.”

Gurnee will receive the $229,469 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. [and] will buy 39 high-tech air packs with masks custom fitted for each firefighter.

Kavanagh said the fire department expects to receive the new air packs in 2015. While the current breathing equipment is tested and considered safe, he said, it has outlived its usefulness.

He said the [money] will pay 90 percent of the new air packs’ cost [and] the village will cover [the balance] of the tab.

… Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was awarded $372,149 for 55 new air packs.

thanks Dan

Local business supports Mt Prospect Fire Department

The Daily Herald posted the following:

The Mount Prospect Fire Department has received a grant totaling nearly $22,000 from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. Fire officials said the funds will be used to provide automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to faith-based organizations in the Mount Prospect community. The sandwich chain, which was founded by firemen, has a location at 1 W. Rand Road in the Randhurst Crossing shopping center.

The Mount Prospect Fire Department formed the partnership with Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to address the need the department saw for quick access to AEDs for cardiac events that residents may experience at a service or event at a faith-based organization. The grant will allow the department to supply 27 AEDs, AED cabinets and related supplies.
