Daniel, I’m not sure. Fleet does all the decision making, the fire department has no say.

Any ideas on who will get the 2 new rearmounts?

Ok so I have on good word that the Tower Ladder specs are still being worked on and NOTHING is on order yet.

Most people realize that the city is in bad shape when it comes to capital funds which is probably why the city has been so slow putting in orders for new apparatus which includes submitting specs for bids on new Tower Ladders. While it’s true that the Tower Ladders are in Chicago’s official buying plan for 2014 , they have been in the official “buying plan” documents since the “second quarter of 2012″ and they keep delaying and putting off issuing specs and requests for bids for the new Tower Ladders. In the current buying plan which was released in January of this year under the heading of ” 100 foot Tower Ladders” they have under the “anticipated
ad date” listed as the first quarter of 2014. So far as I know they haven’t released a request of bids as of yet and remember that this is fourth official “buying plan” that has been issued since the one in the first quarter of 2012 when the Tower Ladders were first listed under the city’s buying plan.
As Ambulances and Tower Ladders are the only “fire apparatus” listed in the latest buying plan , perhaps this time they will finally issue a request for bids for Tower Ladders as opposed to just listing them and putting it off for almost 2 years.

30 over 3 years is what EMC has listed

As I recall, when Spartan/Crimson beat out Pierce on the bid for the new straight stick trucks, the contract was for a total of 30 new trucks over 5 years….If memory serves me correctly…..

Technically, what the CFD calls “tower ladders” are actually “ladder towers”. The primary functional piece of the apparatus is the ladder itself, whereas what the FDNY uses are actual “tower ladders”, where the primary functioning unit of the apparatus is the bucket.

OK gentlemen, the mystery is solved. When Josh saw “rear mount platform”, I can understand where the confusion began. When Spartan calls it “rear mount platform” they are talking about the turn table being on the rear. Mid mounts are called “mid mount platforms”and the turn tables are mid ship. So for instance if the article said “rear mount aerial platform” they would be what we at the CFD call “tower ladders”. These are only straight stick aerials nothing more. There we go fellas……argument over?

Gentleman, here’s a link to a previous CFD aerial delivery on the Spartan ERV website:

Sorry, but it appears this new order isn’t for tower ladders.
#11 by Nick on February 14, 2014 - 8:51 AM
I am 100% certain that these are straight ladders. They are not Tower Ladders. CFD has not ordered any tower ladders nor put out a specification for them. It is a proposed 2014 project that has not yet been approved.

10-4 guys, just trying to verify the info we were presented, but doesn’t matter now since its a typo!
#13 by CFD 1979 on February 13, 2014 - 7:48 PM
If the city was smart, they would choose E-ONE to manufacturer their tower ladders
#14 by Robert on February 13, 2014 - 7:25 PM
103ft rigs we have right now are the Ladder trucks. I know there are some that were going to be ordered. These might be it.

Now, who told me I was wrong six months ago when I said there would be more aerials coming from Spartan? Can’t remember and doesn’t matter, just busting chops. The rear “platform” has to be a typo. I don’t even think they got approval yet to even put the bid out for towers…..did they? And Drew Palatines tower is 100′. Or maybe we are wrong but they don’t make a 103′ tower.
#16 by Drew on February 13, 2014 - 4:41 PM
Here’s the link to Palatine’s new tower ladder, which has a VERY similar if not the same body and cab as the new CFD towers will have. If you click the link to the Spartan site, it indeed says “rear mount platform”.

don’t get your hopes up … it says 103′ rear mount aerial … the tower ladder is 100′. It’s a typo.

Spartan ERV right under specifications “Rear Mount Platform”
#19 by SB on February 13, 2014 - 3:54 PM
Josh,
Can you provide a link that says “Tower Ladder.”
The spartan website says aerial ladder, not aerial platform
#20 by Josh Boyajian on February 13, 2014 - 3:52 PM
It says in the specifications rear mount Tower Ladders
#21 by Brian on February 13, 2014 - 3:45 PM
I agree with Josh….these are aerials, not Tower Ladders
#22 by SB on February 13, 2014 - 3:40 PM
Josh:
Where do you get that these are Tower Ladders? Based on Spartan’s website, these are 2 103′ aerial ladders, not aerial platforms. In fact, Spartan doesnt make a 103′ aerial platform.
No new tower ladders yet.
#23 by Josh Boyajian on February 13, 2014 - 3:34 PM
Well gentleman here are the first two new rear mount platforms for the city. 103foot Tower Ladders
