Joe, got the Eng 1 & 3 question answered before I could, correct!
Sqd 55A was bought with 55 by SCHM and during the process brought to MABAS Div 1 to get support to become the Div 1 squad for TRT/HAZMAT & DIVE. Div 1 helped to partially fund that vehicle. As previous post, it does run all initial responses in MABAS Div 1 for TRT. It is not due to Div 1 on hazmat calls (Other towns are primary with hazmat equipment). As far as Dive, it has come, but they also could just send divers with their equipment in a buggy if need be. Some shifts, depending on call nature are running 55A with 55 on certain extrication dispatches and fire calls.
Finally, prior to the E-Ones (CFD types) as previous posters have written, SCHM also had Macks for engine’s (very short body’s and the very small cab with the bench jumpseat, just like CFD) as well as Seagrave ladder trucks; also same as CFD! The Squad before the E-One that Code 3 models made a diecast of, was the Ford Cab with the body as Drew has mentioned (also similar to what the old pie wagon was for CFD… 🙂

Joe, you are correct – Engines are 3 Man, Truck is 2, Squad is 4. 3 Engine Companys, 2 Truck Companys 1 Stick and 1 Tower, 2 Piece Squad, 4 Ambulance and a buggy..

Engine 1 and 3 used to be run out of station 2 (now 52) on Meacham. When station 4 (now 54) opened in the early 90s they took engine 3 out of service and put engine 5 in service at station 4 (54.) Engine 5 now covered engine 3’s old still district. At that point squad 1 (now squad 55) moved from old station 1 (now 51) on Schaumburg Road to station 4 on Roselle. This lasted, with a few exceptions due to remodeling stations in the mid 2000s, until 2008 when station 55 on Plum Grove was opened.
Schaumburg now runs 4 engines, 1 straight stick, 1 tower, 1 two piece squad, 1 battalion chief, and 4 ambulances. While the minimum manning for the trucks is two, a majority of the time they have 3 men on them. Schaumburg ran with 4 man companies until the 90s. The squad still runs with 4.
Squad 55a was purchased partially because of MABAS 1, so while I believe they thought about making it into a snorkel unit, it wasn’t feasible or reasonable to do it. truck 52 is an aerial tower, so it has a pre-piped waterway, and with truck 53 being a tower ladder I think they felt like they had more than enough elevated master streams to handle any large incident.
0.02, you are correct about how they ran the engine companies out of station 2 when there were 2 of them there. They briefly had 2 ambulances running out of that house as well, but ambulance 3 was moved and became ambulance 5 when station 4 was built.

Bill. I know since i have been going to the fire house , 52 didnt have 2 engines so it had to be in the 90s when they did that..

I believe SFD station 2 ran with Engines 1 and 3 before station 5 was opened. When station 3 opened they got Engine 4 and Truck 2. When Station 4 opened they got Engine 5 and Squad One was relocated to their house until Station 5 opened. When SFD joined NWCD the signatures were changed to the current 50s-series. Before the current Squad 55 and 55A it was a single E-One heavy rescue and prior to that was a Ford C-8000 with a body by, I think, Supervac.
Here’s a nice shot of the 135 ft ladder http://dgfd147.smugmug.com/CHICAGO-METROPOLITAN-AREA-FDs/COOK-COUNTY-NORTH/SCHAUMBURG-FIRE-DEPARTMENT/28690798_6z3cCR

Lieut. Bob Sutherland of the CFD was one of my mentors and teachers on SS-1 (riding every gold shift (3rd), along with his engineer, Bob Haines and FF Tom Dryden (an ex Rolling Meadows police officer). Bob Sutherland wasn’t the first Chicago firefighter to take the helm at the Schaumburg Fire Dept. Fire Chief Lloyd Abrahamsen, former Chicago FD was Fire Chief – January 2, 1970 – January 2, 1980 and was instrumental in bringing Bob Sutherland in to assume department command. I recall one of Schaumburg’s first squad truck’s was an E-One mini pumper in the late 70’s, early 80’s.

the old station 2 district split at golf road. Engine 1 and 2 i believe were housed at station 2 along with truck 1. They justified both engines being there, in service and staffed due to the high rises and the mall. Plus they cover areas on algonquin roadfrom 53 to the east to Quinten road to the west. If ISO actually meant anything they would probably not have taken the 5th engine out of service and reduced the truck companies from 3 firefighters to 2.

Bill: The 2nd Engine out of 52 is the Reserve Engine , They run 3 man engines and 2 man trucks and 4 man squad and im not exactly sure on the 52 2 engine house

Tyler: No problem.
The DH: I’m still waiting for Evergreen Park to obtain a mini-pumper, park it behind the snorkel, and label it SS-3A. Maybe some day.

Tyler did they take the second Engine out of service from station 52 when they opened station 55 or was the second Engine out of Station 52 closed before that? Are they running with three man companies in Schaumburg now? If so weren’t they running with 4 man companies into the 1990’s?
When they were still running station 52 as a double Engine house how did they run the two Engines? Did each one have it’s own separate first/in district or did they have the same district but took turns as to who would be the first out each day?

No, Mike MC, you are a little far north for the mini-Chicago…look no further than Evergreen Park…black over red, single axle straight E-One stick, Command Van 2-7-7 (hmm…), OH and that Seagrave known as Snorkel Squad 3…not to mention that the majority of the staff are CFD guys. Ha!

One of the things that I found impressive about the Schaumburg Fire Department was not only did they run with very impressive Squad companies but at one time not that long ago they even ran a 135 foot E/One Aerial Ladder.
Schaumburg wasn’t the only suburb to run with one either as Naperville also had run a 135 E/One aerial Ladder. Those 135 foot Aerial Ladders really made both Schaumburg and Naperville stand out.

Bill – Westmont also ran an E-One 135′. With E-One now selling the 137′ I wonder if we will see any again in the metro area….

My comments were not to be taken that seriously Tyler. Schaumburg had black over red rigs that copied the CFD years before it became so popular. They were called “Little Chicago”. They used to have a fleet of E-One rigs that were almost identical to Chicago, including a tower ladder.
Their chief of dept. in the 1980’s was the late Bob Sutherland, who was a well known officer and FF on Snorkel Squad 1 in Chicago. So, it would not be that unusual for them to copy a complete Chicago squad, including the snorkel.
And …. I’d be willing to bet that they gave it some serious thought before deciding not to.

Mike Mc. I honestly dont think schaumburg needs a Snorkal . Schaumburg has 2 truck companys already manned a day. Squad 55A never leaves 55 really either unless for a mabas or a big incident in the town.

Thanks for the info.
You can combine multiple companies into one, but you still can’t have them on multiple runs at one time….
#20 by Mike Mc on October 8, 2013 - 10:07 AM
Well Schauburg, if your rigs were not black over red with gold lettering and a white safety stripe, complete with red and green grill lights, and if your long time chief of department was not a fellow named Bob Sutherland (Snorkel Squad 1) well … maybe I would not ask why you do not have a snorkel 55A.
You did consider it, didn’t you?

Squad 55 is the Engine that runs out of Station 55 on the Southeast side of town.. Squad 55 has a Pump and Tank, Squad 55 runs on all EMS Runs, Afa’s, Co’s, Accident ext in district 55 and then runs every fire, accident with entrapment, dive, haz-mat, odor ext. – Squad 55A is the 2nd Piece Squad that Sits in 55 never really moves unless they choice to bring 55A on some runs. 55A runs all Level 1 Haz-Mats, Dives and any MABAS Request.

Gee FFEMT,…..I thought CFD was another way to spell God! LOL.
#23 by 0.02 on October 7, 2013 - 4:57 PM
squad 55 is more of a rescue pumper and 55A has all the TRT stuff. This was the villages way of reducing the city staffing by taking an engine out of service and combining companies. The guys were not for this at all.

What is the difference between Squad 55 and 55A?
#25 by Brian on October 7, 2013 - 2:41 PM
Squad 55 has a pump and tank
#26 by FFEMT on October 7, 2013 - 2:36 PM
Because not everybody just blindly follows Chicago? And Chicago’s way of doing things isn’t the way of god?
#27 by Mike Mc on October 7, 2013 - 1:37 PM
Great photo shots of the rigs. The double section squad is very impressive looking.
I just have to ask this quesion: Why is there no snorkel with Squad 55? Schaumburg must have thought about it … right?
