Another installment from Steve Redick:
… some photos from Cicero back in the 80s …
- I remember this was 2 or 3 frames … the white Grove aerial was one of two white rigs they had as I recall … another was a Ford COE engine …
- a shot of truck 10 at an extra alarm on Goose island … very smoky job … a pallet company I recall …
- Skokie RT17 the rig that caused a truck company to be eliminated … Skokie was never the same after that in my opinion …
Who can name this firehouse? … hint … not Chicago

The current Rescue 17 certainly. Not recalling the exact specs on the old Ford RT-17, but AFAIK it was certainly not a modern front line engine co.

The thing that I liked about having RT 17 in service is that it gave Skokie a 4th Engine company because for most practical purposes the so called “Rescue Truck” is really an Engine with some extra Truck and some Squad equipment on board. It does run as the second Engine in station 17’s district to begin with.
By giving Skokie a 4th Engine it really means that Skokie can respond to a full still alarm and still have the equivalent to a full still protecting the town.
They in fact could have two simultaneous still alarms without having to ask for mutual aide unless they need the change of quarters companies to “move up”.

I cannot beleive you have a picture of Cicero Truck 1 out on the street, let alone working at a fire. That rig was OOS most of the time, a peace of garbage. They did have a white engine, it was E-3 on 26th street, house is now closed. They also had a white rig that ran as a “rescue squad”, a former sign truck.

As for Skokie, IMO the village got much better service out of RT-17 than the truck co. Very few if any dept’s run with a one to one ratio of engines to trucks. Considering the EMS desert that the east side of Skokie was, the Rescue did a lot of good.

At first, I thought it was the old Mundelein volunteer station. But yeah, now I’m thinking Niles….

Would that firehouse happen to be in Niles? Part of a government building off of Milwaukee? I remember driving by it as a kid on the way to the dentist.
