This from Drew Gresik:
Hey guys,I took a quick ride to the West Side today for a Still and Box at 742 N Pine. Engine 96 reported to Main FAO “we got a worker, Office” as they pulled out of quarters. Engine 117 arrived first-in with the tower and reported a Red X 2.5-story going on the 2nd floor and attic in the rear. By the time I arrived on scene, about 20 minutes later, heavy fire was showing from throughout the top floors. Engines 96, 117, and 113 were pumping while Tower 14 had a master stream. Trucks 26 and 29 were on scene as well. Engine 23 and Trucks 35 and 53 were in staging, but I don’t think they were used. Interesting note, Engine 95, Truck 7 and Battalion 4 had a small fire on Kostner just south of Madison right as companies were stretching at this job. Here’s some of my shots. Thanks,Drew Gresik

Your all right. Never know what the city will do. Another squad is needed on the south side! 5 is so over worked and this was once again another case where squad 2 was needed in two places at once. My money says the city will never make it happen. They already want to cut staff! Real shame to see my beloved (world class department as Hoff said) get picked apart by buracrats!

My guess, and it is a big guess, is that they will do with Squad 7 & 2 similar to 5-1-1 & 5-1-2. IE- run Squad 7 out of the airport covering the north side using FAA money to fund it. That way, the city doesn’t need to fund a 5th squad to fill the gaps of the current 3 city squads. We should place bets on this stuff….. Fantasy CFD. LOL!

I had forgotten they had done away with 7b. There was a 7b for a long time.
As for changing districts, I don’t know what the regs say about how far and how often the Squad can leave the airport. Maybe someone can enlighten me.
As you say, we’ll have to wait and see.
In an ideal world CFD would add at least one more squad co and then change up the districts. Considering the huge areas they cover, it makes sense. Of course many things make sense that will never happen…..
Thank for the info.

Just to clarify, there is no Squad 7B. As far as Squad 7 getting a snorkel, the mini is most likely going to become the 2nd piece of Engine 9. Of course, as with all things CFD, you’ll have to wait for it to actually happen to know for sure. Regarding Squad 7 getting a snorkel, don’t be surprised if Squad 2 & 7’s districts get revised and Squad 2 gets moved south into the 12th or 13th Battalion while Squad 7 gets the majority of the 2nd District. Time will tell.

What would they even do with the snorkel at O’Hare? Are they planning on dumping the mini-pumpers currently in service as Sqad 7a and b? Those are needed there, the snorkel is not.

Another interesting coincidence is that both fires were in Squad 2’s working district. It goes to show just how large an area that the squads cover. Squad 5 by far is the busiest and has the largest area to cover, which is why it would be wiser to put the new (4th) Snorkel Squad in service on the far south side than to put it in service at O’Hare where it will barely be used.

Bill, I was actually considering taking a ride to the 2-11 when I heard the 13th get a WRKF, which was much closer to my location. DMc77, I too enjoyed hearing that! Thanks Dan and Josh.

You definitely took in the more visually interesting fire. I was at Humbolt Park and left for the 2-11 as soon as Engine 102 pulled up. I was at about Western and Addison when 96 said the had a hit as they rolled down the apron. I was already committed to the North side. I thought about turning around.

When the Office gave the 13th the working fire upgrade over the radio, the officer of Engine 96 reported that “we could see it from the door, we got a hit”. Hearing that reminded me of the good ‘ol days on the west side where this type of fire was in many cases a multiple times a day occurrence….

Drew thanks for running the photos of the Still and Box on Pine. As you probably know there was a fast moving Still and Box that was raised to a 2-11 alarm on the far north side (2147 W Lunt) in Battalion 9 when the fire on Pine street was burning. Normally Engine 68 would have been the 4th due Engine (2nd on the Box) to the fire on Pine however I believe that they were dispatched to the 2-11 on Lunt ave because the needed to bring the North Side Rehab Van (572) to the 2-11.
