The Chicago Tribune has an article outlining a mayday that was called for firefighters that fell into a basement at on North Newark Avenue:
Four firefighters were injured fighting an extra-alarm blaze on the Far Northwest Side tonight.
The four were hurt in a stairway collapse while fighting the fire in the 5700 block of North Newark Avenue, according to Fire Media.
At 8:18 p.m. firefighters were called to the two-story brick house where the fire started on the first floor of the building, which is currently being rehabbed, Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said.
“Lots of building supplies lying around,” Santiago said.
When five firefighters started to climb a staircase in the house, it gave way and they all fell. Four firefighters were injured and transported to Resurrection Medical Center in good condition.

Isn’t the Plan 1 supposed to be automatic?

Let me preface my statement by saying I am not a firefighter. I question what five guys were doing on the stairs at a time, especially when it was determined that the building was being renovated. That had to be roughly 1100 pounds on those stairs. Seems like a lot.
Again, just playing armchair quarterback. I am very glad no one was seriously injured. Be safe one and all.
