FYI for my news friends,
From now through Monday night I will be live streaming radio traffic from the NATO events, marches and protests. Should be some pretty incredible listening based on what we’ve heard so far.

NATO Summit will test new CFD digital radios

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that high level communications during the NATO Summit in Chicago will be conducted with the long awaited CFD digital radios.

A $23 million digital radio system — purchased in 2006 under a no-bid contract awarded under questionable circumstances — will help speed emergency response during the NATO Summit.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford disclosed Thursday that “some of the channels” provided by the long-stalled Motorola system would be used by top brass for “command and control” within the “NATO summit footprint” surrounding McCormick Place.

“This will allow us to operate and dispatch resources separately from the regular citywide system and the main radio system for better flexibility and control,” Langford said.

The Motorola radios were purchased in 2006 to prevent communications breakdowns like the one that contributed heavily to six deaths at an October 2003 high-rise fire at 69 W. Washington.

A young child died in a fire Thursday afternoon in unincorporated Joliet …

The child was found in a second-floor bedroom of a home on the 1300 block of Sherman Street …

“Deputies attempted to get into that back bedroom, were beaten back by smoke and flames, and firemen subsequently knocked down fire and did find remains of what appears to be a young infant in that room,” {Will County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Ken} Kaupas said.

ABC 7 reported:

When firefighters arrived Thursday, the second floor of the house was engulfed in flames. One woman was able to escape.

She and neighbors reportedly tried to get inside to find the child. Firefighters searched through heavy smoke, but the victim had already been killed.
