Maywood Box Alarm 2-19-12

The Maywood Fire Department fought a fire early Sunday morning in a vacant three-story building. Companies pulled a Box Alarm as they had heavy fire in the attic and on the top floor at 907 S. 3rd Ave. Both Maywood and Melrose Park’s trucks were working.

Gordon J. Nord., Jr was at the scene and submitted several dramatic images of illustrating the heavy fire and the trucks working.

Upcoming changes for the CFD?

Bill Post submitted the following thoughts

On the 6PM Channel 2 Chicago News tonight (Friday) the opening story was about possible cuts to the Chicago Fire Department. Reporter Jay Levine mentioned that out of over 90 fire stations, 11 of them were older, single company stations that were said to be “old inefficient and going away” according to “fire department sources”.  It was also cited that 5 or 6 stations could possibly be closed and the approximately 150 men that are assigned to them would “not be replaced but would instead be used to make up for the difference for firefighters who are retiring.”

Engine 78’s station was used as an example. Engine 83’s station was also used as an example. However it was a poor example as the said “merging slower fire houses” like Engine 83 on Wilson Ave in Uptown could save the city money, similar to the Mayor’s idea of closing some police stations. Since when is Engine 83 a “slower” house? Police stations and fire stations are like comparing apples and oranges. Most of the policemen assigned to the stations are out on the streets in their cars on patrol and assigned to beats while firefighters and paramedics are at their local fire station so they can protect the neighborhood that they serve. It is necessary for them to be there so they can be on the scene in less then 5 minutes.

Other sources of potential savings cited  were “duty availability pay” costing about $15 million dollars, the clothing allowance costing about $5 million dollars annually and the specialty pay for hazardous materials specialists, scuba divers, and paramedic training that cost an extra 5%  added to the firefighter’s salary.

I personally have a question. Who were the “fire department sources” that had said that single company stations were “old inefficient  and going away”. It’s hard for me to imagine that anyone from the Chicago Fire Department would say that, as it is a known fact that in all major fire departments the ratio of Engine to Truck companies is always higher and therefore there are always more Single Engine Stations to multi company (Engine and Truck) stations in just about every major fire department.

Crimson aerials for Chicago in production

A visit to the Crimson Aerial facility in Ephrata, PA two weeks ago found three units in various stages of the production process. One was going to be shipped to the company’s facility in South Dakota for the mounting of the body, another was a few days behind the first, and the third chassis had not yet had the aerial mounted. By now they should all be in South Dakota.

Two suburban garage fires 2-16-12

The Rolling Meadows Fire Department …

responded to 2019 Martin Lane this morning and companies found a fully involved detached garage. They were able to get water on the fire and knock it down within minutes. Rolling Meadows Engines 15 and 16 were on the scene along with both ambulances, the 15th Battalion, and Squad 15. Mutual aid engines came from Palatine and the Palatine Rural Fire District, Arlington Heights came with an ambulance and a tower ladder, and the 7th Battalion from Palatine Rural was also on-scene.

The Glenview Fire Department

received multiple calls reporting a fire in an attached garage at 1755 Monterey Court this afternoon. Engine 7 was the first unit on the scene and had heavy smoke filling the entire driveway plus coming out the front door. They took a line in the front door to hit the fire from inside the house while a second exterior line went up the driveway. All four Glenview engines, two ambulances, the truck, and Battalion 6 were on the scene with Morton Grove Engine 5, Prospect Heights Squad 9, and Northbrook Tower 12 mutual aid. Glenview companies made a quick stop and the mutual aid companies were released shortly after they arrived.

Santiago appointed as new CFD Fire Commissioner

The Chicago Tribune has an article HERE about Mayor Emanuel’s appointment of Jose Santiago as the Fire Commissioner:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel today appointed the former head of the city’s 911 center as fire commissioner as he formally announced the resignation of Robert Hoff, a veteran hero firefighter.

Emanuel praised Hoff for his “determined and dedicated service,” mentioning his many awards as a firefighter. “The true tribute to his service is the lives” of those he saved, Emanuel said at a news conference.

The incoming fire commissioner, Jose Santiago, was an assistant deputy fire commissioner before taking over the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications in 2010 under Mayor Richard Daley. Santiago has been serving as deputy fire chief for operations since leaving OEMC.

Rockford orders four rigs

The Rockford Fire Department currently runs several pieces of apparatus that are in need of replacement. Over the past four years, they have disposed of three 1976 Pirsch quints. They still have a fourth 1976 Pirsch quint and a 1976 Seagrave 100′ TDA in reserve. They recently placed an order with Pierce for four new units. Three Velocity 105′ quints with steel ladders and a Saber engine have been  ordered. Two of the quints were being built as stock units and will be delivered within 90 days. The 3rd quint and the Saber are being built specifically for Rockford and are expected within 6-8 months.

The Saber engine will have a 2,000-GPM pump, 500 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam. The quints will have 2,000-GPM pumps and 500-gallon water tanks. All units will be white over red. Rockford will be putting three units up for auction when the new units are in service. These include a 1976 Pirsch quint, a 1995 Pierce 105′ quint, and a 1991 E-ONE Hush pumper that formerly belonged to Naperville.

Andy Hilk found this article detailing the city council agreeing to the apparatus replacement.

A vote in Rockford City Council ensures the fire department will get four new vehicles by the end of the year.

Alderman voted 12-1 in favor of the plan and the fire department expects it will have some of the equipment in the next 30 days.  Older vehicles will be replaced. The department will get 3 new quints, which are engines with ladders and one standard engine.

All total, the four vehicles have an estimated cost of $3.2 million.  The city will lease them for 7 years at a rate of $350,000 per year. Rockford will continue to lease new vehicles for other departments. It’s part of a long term plan aimed at upgrading the city’s fleet in a cost effective way.
