Lisle house fire 7/1/11

Stephen Wilcox submitted yet another recent house fire from Dupage County, this time in Lisle. Stephen submitted several images and commentary;

This box alarm was in an unhydranted area in the north end of Lisle’s district. Typically, the weather was hot and humid. No one home at the time of the fire (1115 hours on 7/1/11) may have contributed to a response delay. Structure was one story “L” shaped, about 40″X80″ ordinary, located on Red Oak. Command also called a box for tankers.

Barrington is on the site

Barrington Fire Department patchIn MABAS Division 4, the Barrington Fire Department and the Barrington & Countryside Fire Protection District cover areas in Lake, Cook, and McHenry counties, plus their district borders areas of DuPage and Kane counties. This district includes the town of Barrington, plus portions of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Inverness, and Lake Barrington. They are also responsible for some unincorporated areas of Lake, Cook, and McHenry counties. The fire district responds from three stations, one of which is located in Barrington, one is in Barrington Hills, and the third is in Lake Barrington. All stations have at least one engine or quint plus an ambulance, and the district has two tankers to bring water to the many areas that they cover which do not have a system of hydrants.

Their apparatus is a mixture of E-ONE, Pierce, US Tanker, and Wheeled Coach.

Barrington Fire Department US Tanker

An interesting and somewhat complex explanation of fire district coverage throughout the ‘Barrington’ area is addressed in the FAQ section of the Barrington & Countryside FPD website, which states in part that “… there are actually nine fire departments covering the Barrington mailing addresses.”

Who provides my fire and paramedic services?

The Barrington Fire Department provides services to all of the Village of Barrington and the Barrington countryside Fire Protection District. The B.C.F.P.D. covers much of the surrounding Barrington Area. However, there are actually nine fire departments covering the Barrington mailing addresses.

If you are outside of the limits of the Village of Barrington, you can tell who provides your fire and paramedic services by looking at your property tax bill. The bill will identify the fire district you are covered by.
In general, the Barrington Area is covered as follows:

Barrington 2-11 5-10-11

Barrington Fire Department house fire Flynn Creek 5-10-11 2-11

Firefighters encountered heavy fire upon arrival and had to shuttle water to the scene. The fire which reportedly began in the garage spread quickly throughout the home which appeared from the front to be a ranch house when in fact there were two-stories in the rear.Larry Shapiro photo

Shortly before 1AM, Barrington received a call reporting fire in an attached garage at 27818 W. Flynn Creek Drive. This is an area without hydrants and the initial alarm included both tankers from Barrington plus mutual aid from Long Grove with Tanker 55 in addition to all Barrington companies and a Lake Zurich engine.  Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the house that sits on a hill with one-story in front and two-stories in the rear. They immediately upgraded to a Box Alarm which brought help from Carpentersville, Hoffman Estates, East Dundee, Cary, Rolling Meadows, Wauconda, Palatine, and the Palatine Rural Fire Department. Flynn Creek is a narrow, one-lane road which barely accommodated the tankers and a handful of other apparatus. As the fire progressed, a 2nd alarm was struck which brought tankers from South Elgin, Bartlett, and Nunda in addition to another truck and two more engines. Most of the 2nd alarm companies were not put to work.

The tanker shuttle brought roughly 42,000 gallons of water to the fire from 8 tankers. There were no injuries reported.

Larry Shapiro was at the fire and submitted a few quick images. The gallery can be viewed HERE, and the video is still in the works.

Bartlett first department posted in Division 2

Bartlett FPD patchThe Bartlett Fire District covers the Village of Bartlett as well as unincorporated Hoffman Estates and portions of Wayne Township. As such, their district is within two different counties; Cook and DuPage. Bartlett is dispatched via DU-COMM, but is a member of MABAS Division 2. Bartlett has three stations, two of which staff an ambulance and an engine, while the third station has a jump company responsible for a tower ladder, 3,000-gallon tanker (tender), and a brush truck. The rigs have been painted black over red for a number of years now, but previously they were bright yellow. Bartlett currently has a 1993 Seagrave engine that has been decommissioned which was originally delivered yellow and is now black and red.

The newest apparatus are three Pierce Velocity units. Prior to that are two E-ONE units which were preceded by a pair of Seagrave engines. In the 1980s and prior years, Bartlett (known then as the Bartlett and Countryside FPD) purchased Howe and Grumman engines.

Engine 612 was the original name for this unit when it was delivered to Bartlett in 1993. This was the second of two similar units in Bartlett, the first of which was delivered in 1991. Larry Shapiro collection

Bartlett FPD Ford Grumman engine

Engine 618 was one of two twin units delivered in 1982. These were both built on Ford C8000 chassis with 1,000-GPM pumps and 750-gallon water tanks. Grumman had purchased Howe and these were labeled as Grumman FireCat units. Larry Shapiro colection

Bartlett FPD Hendrickson Howe engine

Prior to the two Ford/Grumman engines, Bartlett purchased a pair of these Hendrickson 1871S/International/Howe TM engines. Each carried 750 gallons of water and had a 1,000-GPM pump. This unit was delivered in 1977 and the sister unit was delivered in 1973. Pictured here is Bartlett's old fire station which was across the railroad tracks from the main station. The building is now home to the Hanover Township Emergency Services. Larry Shapiro collection

Shown here at Station 1 on Oak Avenue, Engine 612 was a 1973 Hendrickson 1871S/International/Howe 1,000-GPM TM unit with 750 gallons of water. Unlike Engine 613, this unit had high side compartments. Larry Shapiro collection

Bartlett FPD Ford Howe engine

Going back even further is this classic 1963 Ford C950/Howe engine #616. Like the units that were purchased later, this had a 1,000-GPM pump and carried 800 gallons of water. Larry Shapiro collection

Another interesting unit is the 1997 HME/US Tanker 3,000-gallon tender. This is one of three area tankers on HME chassis. The other two belong to the Palatine Rural FPD and the East Dundee FPD. All three of these worked the same fire in Barrington during September of 2008.

Seperated by one tanker (a Freightliner/US Tanker from South Elgin) are the three area HME/US Tanker units in staging at the Barrington 2-11 in June of 2008. Larry Shapiro photo

One final note of interest is the 8,000-gallon, tractor-trailer tanker that preceded the 3,000-gallon HME/US Tanker unit in Bartlett. The tractor was an L-Series Ford.

Countryside shows off new engine … and entertains many

The Countryside Fire Protection District has been conducting various training scenarios for several weeks now at 27693 Chevy Chase Road, in Mundelein. The homeowner donated the house for fire training in return for having it burned to the ground making way for the construction of a new home. We posted images from Dan McInerney HERE showing the new Rosenbauer engine and tender from US Tanker working.

As fire consumes the detached garage, the structure finally collapses. Larry Shapiro photo

Countryside invited local residents, neighboring fire departments and their families, CERT, and anyone else fascinated by big fires, to come and watch them burn the house and detached garage to the ground this past Sunday.

Larry Shapiro was one of those who attended and took the opportunity to work with the fire department to get some nice images of the new Rosenbauer Centurion engine with fire in the background. There is a gallery HERE with images and there will be an accompanying video as well.

Wauconda, Long Grove, and Libertyville sent tankers so that there was a continuous water supply at the scene. The tanker from Libertyville was the 1988, Pierce Dash, 1250/2500 which Countryside recently gave them. It has been re-lettered for Libertyville.

Barrington brush fire

Throughout the north and northwest suburbs during the past week or so, the skies have been dotted by random headers which have largely been the result of widespread prescribed prairie burns. Occasionally, the fires have not been sanctioned or properly permitted and necessitate a fire department response. Tuesday, while driving through the northwest suburbs, Larry Shapiro followed a header to a prairie fire that was not supervised.

Barrington Fire District prairie fire

Upon arrival of the first Barrington companies, the fire was running along a line in the middle of a large field. The dense smoke had already subsided. Larry Shapiro photo

Barrington units were dispatched to a prairie fire behind homes on Old Dundee Road west of Sutton (Route 59). While en-route, responding units requested additional companies based on what was a substantial header. They found a large field that had been largely consumed already but with a good amount of fuel load remaining and conditions which would endanger at least one large home with a shift in the wind.

Although flame heights were fairly impressive as depicted here, the fuel load was not sufficient to sustain the fire for very long. Larry Shapiro photo

Barrington’s new IHC/US Tanker was on the scene as well as two engines, a quint, an ambulance, battalion chief, and brush unit. The fire was controlled without incident and contained within the prairie grasses without encroaching on the residential properties.

Countryside training with new rigs

The Countryside Fire Department in MABAS Division 4 has been hosting several days of training for their firefighters and neighboring departments as well. Countryside has two of their new units working at the training site. These are the IHC/US Tanker 2,000-gallon tanker (tender) and the IHC/Rosenbauer Timberwolf interface engine. Dan McInerney forwarded several images from Wednesday’s work.

Dan writes the following description about the training:

It’s in a two story house on a five acre plot. The house was built in 1948. It is masonary construction with lathe and plaster over true dimensional lumber. All three Countryside (CTYD) shifts will participate Wed, Thu, and Fri. The CTYD POCs will train Thursday night. Other depts: Lake Zurich, Wauconda, and Lincolnshire – Riverwoods, are sending an engine each day with their on-duty crews. Water is being “tendered” in and drafted out of a portable tank by the wildland engine for the primary attack hoselines, and off the tender as a secondary/backup water source. Evolutions are consisting of hose advancement and fire attack. Due to the construction of the house, the fire evolutions are pretty good and so far the upstairs rooms have withstood a tremendous amount of abuse. They sure don’t build them like this anymore! Also, as an interesting side note, there is a house on an island in the middle of Countryside Lake that we will eventually burn down, but not train in.  It is only accessible by boat!
