Video (part 1) from Larry Shapiro 4-Alarm house fire in Barrington Hills – 1-30-17

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

A large house that was being expanded was a total loss Tuesday morning, after an immense fire in west suburban Barrington, while the family was overseas on vacation. An addition being built onto the 3,800-square-foot home appeared to be about 2,000 square feet.

By the time neighbors saw the fire, it had already grown quite large.

The fire started around 2 a.m. at a home at the end of a quarter-mile driveway on Cuba Road between Old Barrington Road and Route 59. A total of 30 suburban fire departments were called to the scene with more than 100 firefighters.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire, 1-28-17 (part 3)

This from Eric Haak:

This fire came in about 1:30 Saturday afternoon (1/28/17). It was in a great old home from the 1800’s at 45th and Ellis. I arrived just after it was boxed by the 5th Battalion. It looked like the fire was mostly in the attic area. The exposure was reported as vacant and in poor condition but the fire was held to the original occupied section.

Niles Fire Department news

Excerpts from teamsterslocal700.com:

Teamsters Local 700 members of the Niles Fire Department voted unanimously to ratify their contract on Wednesday, Jan. 11 with a 35-0 margin. The current contract between the Village of Niles and Teamsters Local 700 will expire on April 30, 2017, and the new contract will be effective on May 1, 2017.

The new four-year agreement includes a nine-and-a-half percent raise for all members across the life of the contract, with a two percent increase in the first year and a two-and-a-half percent increase the next three years. Members will also receive the same health care and sick time/duty injury benefits that were in the previous contract at no extra cost to them.

Negotiations between the village and Local 700 were held on Jan. 5 and a new contract draft was agreed upon a few days later. Niles Fire Department Steward Rich Scipione said everyone was pleased with how quickly the negotiating process took place.

“We have never signed a contract so quick,” said Scipione. “Last time, we had to go three years without a contract. This time, we were focused on maintaining our benefits and we continue to be a top paid fire department.”

An additional benefit that continues in the new contract is tuition reimbursement up to $3,050 per calendar year for full-time employees who are continuing their education.

Teamsters Local 700 represents more than 10,000 public employees across Illinois including firefighters at the Niles Fire Department, Roberts Park Fire Department, Summit Fire Department, and Prospect Heights Fire Department.

Sussex Fire Department news

Excerpts from Waukeshanow.com:

The Sussex Fire Commission appointed David Johnsen to serve as the new Sussex fire chief on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Johnsen will join the Sussex Fire Department on Feb. 27; he is fulfilling his final work commitments with his current employer, the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District in Illinois.

Johnsen started his 30-year career in fire service with the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department. He began working for the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District in August 1991. Johnsen progressed through the ranks from firefighter to lieutenant to captain, then battalion chief, which was his most recent position prior to being hired by Sussex.

He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Benedictine University in 2007, and obtained his bachelor of arts degree in management from there in 2004.

As established by the Sussex Village Board in August, Johnsen’s salary will be in the range of $80,000 to $95,000.

Johnsen will take over from Deputy Chief Tony Emanuele, who has been interim fire chief since former Fire Chief Colin ‘Corky’ Curtis retired in June.
