Loves Park Fire Department news

Excerpts from wrex.com:

On June 23rd, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s office and Loves Park Fire Department (LPFD) announced an agreement for 911 dispatching services and this past Monday, the tele-communicators at the Winnebago County 911 Center started to dispatch emergency calls for the Loves Park Fire Department. LFPD will also gain access to the county’s Computer Aided Dispatch software (CAD) giving them all the  dispatch information right at their fingertips.

Previously, when a Loves Park resident called 911, the operator would then contact Mercyhealth, who would then call the agency that was needed, creating a time delay of anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute.

The county tele-communicators are responsible for receiving all 911 calls representing both emergency and non-emergency requests outside the City of Rockford, and for dispatching all law enforcement agencies outside the City of Rockford.

The Loves  Park Fire Department is the first fire agency to be dispatched by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Peoria Heights Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from 25newsnow.com:

The room was packed Tuesday afternoon in the Peoria Heights Village Hall for a historic public safety decision.

During the special meeting, the village went back and forth on whether to outsource the 106-year-old volunteer fire department to the City of Peoria.

The concerns and frustrations were visible on the faces of the firefighters, EMTs, and residents in attendance. The board of trustees weighed all options, with representatives of both Peoria Heights and Peoria fire departments on hand to answer questions.

Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger made it clear that the Peoria Heights administration approached City Manager Patrick Urich on if a change would help. He added Peoria fire could get to 93% of calls in Peoria Heights within four minutes.

Two trustees said the most surprising comment came from fellow trustee Matt Wigginton.

He said there is an Illinois law saying local governments serving more than 500 people cannot abolish a fire department without passing a voter referendum.

“In all of our discussions, we’ve heard it’s either this or that,” said Trustee Wigginton. “It’s either you do this and can’t do that. Well, I think we can do both. And frankly, I don’t see another way legally to do it.”

Wigginton said it’s possible to use a model that would use both fire departments.

No action was taken on the proposed idea.

The Peoria Heights Village Board is expected to meet on the matter again next month. No date has been set.

Of interest … Firefighter Lloyd Ruediger LODD

Excerpts from fox2now.com:

The New Haven-Berger Fire Protection District mourns the loss of one of its own. Firefighter Lloyd Ruediger recently died in the line of duty. He dedicated 59 years of his life to the New Haven community. He was 84 years old.

Ruediger was a volunteer firefighter. The fire district says he died Monday after responding to a house fire the evening before. He suffered a cardiac arrest. He is survived by three adult children and many grandchildren.

“He was an army veteran. Fifty-nine years of service, dedicated service to this community. It’s a tragic loss for New Haven-Berger Fire and everyone that he touched over the years,” said Mike Thiemann, Metro West Fire District Division Chief.

Chief Thiemann had come to the fire district to help with service and funeral planning, and said several nearby agencies have been keeping watch over him.

“They’ve been watching over Lloyd since this occurred. He is at the medical examiner’s office, and they’ve been keeping watch,” said Thiemann “They will continue that throughout this entire process so that the family has confidence that he’s being taken care of.”

Firefighter honors will be paid on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the New Haven Fire Station.

Peoria Heights Fire Department news

Excerpts from 25newsnow.com:

The Peoria Heights Village Board of Trustees has wrestled with whether or not to outsource its volunteer fire department, but there were talks of transferring the services to the City of Peoria during last week’s board meeting.

The Village of Peoria Heights has discussed this potential move since 20-19. The village administrator believes it could better protect residents, but Peoria fire’s projected costs for fire calls and EMS services would exceed the budgeted amount for 2022 in Peoria Heights. The budget for all fire and EMS last year was $407,000. The projected cost for fire calls alone, if the board of trustees outsources the service, is $1,600 per call.

It’s unclear whether any agreement would be per call or a flat annual rate.

Terms of the contract have not been negotiated yet. The mayor of Peoria Heights said they can’t afford to pay a professional department, and the citizens of the village deserve to have more than one firefighter on duty at a time.

Working fire in Berwyn, 6-24-23

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

Saturday afternoon, Berwyn & Cicero Fire Departments were receiving calls for a house fire around Cermak Rd & Harvey Ave, right on the border of the two towns. Berwyn Engine 903 arrived to find a well-advanced, fully-involved house extending to both exposures. Crews led out numerous lines to the front and back. Engine 902 was feeding the aerial pipe of the truck, and Engine 901 lead out through the gangways from the block over to the rear. All in all, the fire was at a Box Alarm level, and seven hand lines were in operation. Cicero Engine 2, Forest Park Engine 401, and North Riverside E807 were hard at work as well.
