Cancer in the fire service

Excerpts from thechiefleader.com:

Under legislation pending in Albany (NY), city firefighters would be granted a five-year post-retirement period in which they could revise their retirement option if they developed cancer that may be linked to carcinogens they were exposed to on the job.

Epidemiological studies have established the firefighting-cancer link for several years. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Occupational Environmental Medicine, based on the review of the health records of 30,000 firefighters from Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco, found “evidence of a relation between firefighting and cancer” and a new finding that found evidence of “excess malignant mesothelioma” as well.

Since 2002, cancer was the cause in almost two out of every three firefighter line-of-duty deaths, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Also included would be any WTC firefighter who developed cancer subsequently but was told by officials that they developed it too soon after 9/11 to claim it was job-related under the Zadroga Act.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited formaldehyde, asbestos, and arsenic as problematic.

Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from wrex.com:

Harlem-Roscoe firefighters now have a one-of-a kind grill thanks to the Harlem High School welding class built that a custom grill for the fire department. The class started working on it at the beginning of the school year this year and just delivered it this week.

It even has some authentic firefighter embellishments on it donated by Harlem-Roscoe. If you want to see the grill in person firefighters are bringing it to their golf play day next Friday at Atwood Golf Course.

Prospect Heights Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the Journal-topics.com:

The Prospect Heights Fire District will host a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 8 at the district’s main firehouse to honor two civilians whose efforts helped save a life.

The first part of the ceremony will honor Gabriele Noreikaite and Tom Ciupka. According to Fire Chief Drew Smith, on June 2 the two were visiting family in Prospect Heights when they heard a car crash, investigated, and found a male patient unresponsive, not breathing, and slumped over the wheel of his vehicle.

They removed the man from the car and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. After care by the paramedics, who also will be honored, the man is doing well and will be discharged from a rehabilitation facility within days. He said that without their efforts, the outcome would have been very different.

The second part of our ceremony will swear in the fire district’s newest member, Michael Lynch, who started as a part-time employee two years ago and was recently promoted to a full-time firefighter.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the proposed police and fire training facility that is opposed by activists is likely to cost more than previously estimated. She says as it’s currently designed, the projected $95 million facility is unlikely to meet the needs of first responders the police department and fire department, particularly firefighters. She doesn’t know what the ultimate costs will be, but she wants it to be the best-in-class training facility for first responders anywhere in the country.

Opponents contend the proposed facility is a waste of money that should go toward education, job training, and mental health services.
