2nd Alarm house fire in South Barrington 7-9-13 (more)

From the Chicago Tribune:

South Barrington police say a mother and her two young children are safe after lightning struck their home this afternoon, starting a fire.

The incident took place around noon in the 0-100 block of Terra Vita Drive in South Barrington, police said—with the family inside—and initially was reported as an explosion.

He said the now-displaced family safely left the two-story, wood-and-brick house without help. No one was hurt but the house appears to be destroyed and has heavy damage to the attic, second floor and parts of the first floor, Deegan said.

Units were called to the scene and found smoke and fire from the roof. Companies initially made an interior attack but were reportedly forced to retreat due to insufficient water. At one point before all of the initial units arrived on-scene, there was some sort of explosion (possibly a smoke explosion) which blew out the front door. Fortunately, no one was injured as companies were preparing to make entry at that time. The alarm was upgraded to a box alarm and the attack went defensive. The house is located on a dead end street with no hydrants, just off Barrington Road.

The Still Alarm and Box Alarm brought: two engines and a 75′ quint from Barrington, a tower ladder from Palatine, tankers/tenders from Palatine Rural, Nunda Rural, Bartlett, Wauconda, and East Dundee. Additional engines came from Lake Zurich, Long Grove, Hoffman Estates, Fox River Grove, and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills. Ambulances came from Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove along with a squad from Cary.

Larry Shapiro was at the scene and submitted several images.

Barrington Engine 2, the first engine on  the scene, went into the driveway. Palatine Rural Tanker 36 arrived soon after and backed into the driveway to nurse Engine 2 until the tanker shuttle could be setup. One portable tank was dropped in front of Tanker 36 and two were dropped near Barrington Engine 1 just past the house.

These engines would eventually supply a master stream from the Palatine tower ladder and several hand lines in the rear sector.

The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm for tenders after it became apparent that more units were needed to maintain a constant water supply. Tankers/tenders came from South Elgin, Crystal Lake, and Fox Lake. With the exception of Palatine Rural Tanker 36 which was stationary, the other tankers each made at least four runs each to refill and dump.

Three portable tanks were dropped and tied together on Barrington Road to provide for a quicker turnaround. Long Grove Engine 55 drafted from these tanks and supplied the palatine Rural tanker through a moderate lay of 5″ LDH.

Lake Zurich 2nd Alarm house fire in Hawthorn Woods 6-23-13

After midnight on Sunday, the Lake Zurich Fire Department was notified of a fire that was burning on the back deck of a house at 11 Rosewood Drive in Hawthorn Woods. First arriving companies found a fire on the back deck that had communicated to the house, and that all of the residents had evacuated. This area of Hawthorn Wood is without hydrants and the fire was upgraded to a box alarm and then quickly to a 2nd alarm which brought a total of seven water tankers to the scene.

Wauconda’s tower ladder initially setup for an elevated master stream as the fire spread to the attic, but the water supply was insufficient and the defensive attack was conducted with hand lines.

Two portable tanks were dropped and a tanker shuttle was initiated to support the operations through a Lake Zurich engine. The fire consumed the entire rear section of the attic and roof with damage to several second floor rooms.

A contributor submitted two early images from the scene and Larry Shapiro  submitted several images and a video.

Lake Zurich 4th Alarm house fire 4-21-13

Shortly before 8PM on Sunday evening, the Lake Zurich Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at the house across the street. The chief and 1st engine arrived within minutes and reported a 2-1/2 story, wood frame house with heavy fire in the front at 21716 W. Glendale Road. Lake Zurich Engine 3 was the first engine and had water on the fire very quickly. They hit it with a deck gun and knocked down the majority of the fire which was on the exterior of the house consuming cedar shingle siding. As the first company was making their way into the house with a line, they received a report that a resident might still be inside.

The alarm was elevated to a 2nd Alarm which included water tenders since the fire was in an unincorporated subdivision without hydrants. All residents were quickly accounted for at a neighbor’s home. The balance of the fire was knocked within 20 minutes and companies began extensive overhaul.

There were two injuries which required hospital transport. One was a resident and the other was a neighbor who passed out on the lawn. A firefighter injured his arm but after being evaluated at the scene he signed a release. Prior to transporting the second patient, since the ambulances at the scene were committed either to patient care, rehab, or firefighting duties, the alarm was escalated to a 3rd Alarm for ambulances only plus change of quarters companies.

When the firefighter was injured and there was concern that he too would be transported, a 4th Alarm was requested bringing only the ambulances that were due.

There were many departments at the scene including: Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Long Grove, Round Lake, Libertyville, Deerfield, Palatine Rural, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Fox Lake, Nunda Rural, Mundelein, Wauconda, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, the Quad 2 Command Unit, Countryside, Schaumburg, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Barrington, and Cary.

Fox Lake 2nd Alarm house fire 4-8-13

This from Jeff Rudolph:

… some shots from Fox Lake … 04/08/13 Fox Lake responded to a fire in the 38000 blk. of Hillandale in un-incorporated Spring Grove . Engine 223 arrived and found an elevated 1-story house well involved. Command called for an Antioch engine and a Spring Grove tender before pulling box 22-14 to the 2nd alarm for tenders and chiefs, as well as a special for squads from McHenry and Newport. Steep terain and limited access proved difficult for both firefighters and apparatus, as tenders had to back down several blocks of narrow winding gravel roads. Initial thoughts that the resident was still inside the burning house proved wrong, as he arrived from a trip to the store to find firefighters attempting to save his home. Crews worked into the night to extinguish and overhaul the remains. No injuries reported.

Barrington 2nd & 4th Alarm fire 10-10-12

The Barrington Fire Department received a call near shift change this morning for a barn on fire at 21089 Ridge Road in Barrington Hills. First arriving companies found light smoke visible from the road and proceeded down the private drive with Quint 362, Tanker 362, and Engine 363. Engine 361 dropped 1,000′ feet of large diameter hose back to the street where two 3,000-gallon portable tanks were setup for a water supply. This area of Barrington Hills has no hydrants.

The three units in the driveway provided 3,500 gallons of water plus another 960 gallons from Engine 1 prior to the establishment of the tanker shuttle. A MABAS Box Alarm was requested immediately and the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm within minutes. Tankers from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Round Lake, and Wauconda were due along with squads from Cary and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, trucks from Palatine, Elgin, and Mundelein, ambulances from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield, plus engines from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, West Dundee, and Hoffman Estates.

The barn/garage structure that was burning contained hay, a boat, a fork lift, and several other mechanical devices in addition to various equipment and supplies. Several horses were safely evacuated to an adjacent pasture.

The alarm was upgraded to a 4th Alarm for tankers only which added Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Bartlett, Nunda Rural, and Crystal Lake.

Tim Olk arrived at the scene shortly after the Box Alarm was requested, and Larry Shapiro arrived roughly 30 minutes later. Both have images which will post plus a video as they become available.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with an ankle injury.
