Troy Fire Protection District news

This from Jim Skrabel:

I took in the Troy Box at Skooters Roadhouse today (11/27/17). Troy fire crews made a quick knock of the fire. It appeared the fire was in the kitchen area and extended into the mansard roof. Troy’s tower ladder crew opened the mansard which was difficult because it was covered by sheet metal. Plainfield’s tower ladder was set up on the west side of the building.

Troy Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the herald news.com:

Troy FPD Lt. John Probst was preparing to return from a vacation with his girlfriend when he collapsed Tuesday morning, Troy Fire Protection District Chief Andy Doyle said. Probst was taken to a hospital, but did not survive.

“It was some kind of medical issue, but we weren’t told more than that,” Doyle said Wednesday morning. “Everybody here is in shock. It’s hard to believe.”

Doyle said the Estero, FL fire chief notified Troy firefighters of Probst’s death Tuesday afternoon.

Probst, 35, began his career with the Hometown Fire Department in 1999 and came to Troy in 2006. His last assignment was supervising a shift of four firefighters at Fire Station 1. Probst and his crew received a lifesaving award two years ago for resuscitating a man who’d gone into full cardiac arrest.

Probst was also a member of the agency’s Hazardous Materials and Technical Rescue teams who loved training.

“He was a really good fireman. If you needed something done at a scene, you knew John could get it done or help someone get it done,” Doyle said.

Probst is survived by a 14-year-old son, his parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Funeral arrangements were pending Wednesday.

Troy Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the Herald-News.com:

On Tuesday, the Troy Fire Protection District was presented with an award of recognition by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

“We are only the second municipal (agency) in the state to get this award and the third fire department in the country,” Fire Chief Andy Doyle said.

The process began when a state OSHA inspector made a surprise visit to the district in March 2016 and spent several hours examining both stations. There also was an extensive review of the department’s documentation for testing and safety procedures. Based on that report, four inspectors returned last summer for another daylong inspection and came back again weeks later.

“They looked at the gear, the apparatus. We had someone out mowing the lawn that day and they checked to make sure he was wearing ear protection,” Doyle said.

“They wanted to review our plan in the event of a fire,” Doyle said. “This is a fire station. We’d grab a hose and put it out, but we had to formalize what some of the administrative staff would do.”

Doyle said such inspections help taxpayers by keeping the district’s insurance premiums and workman’s compensation claims low.

“Firefighting is already inherently dangerous, but I think this shows we have policies and procedures in place to keep people as safe as possible in the fire service,” he said.
