Rolling Meadows firefighters on Tuesday spent their last day at Fire Station 15 on Meadow Drive before moving into their new station at 3201 Algonquin Rd. Wednesday (Dec. 18).

“This station was built in the early to mid ‘50s and has served the community since then, about 65 years,” said a Facebook post from the Rolling Meadows Fire Dept. “Tens of thousands of emergency calls have had equipment respond from this firehouse. We wish her well, but can’t be certain of her future.”

The city council approved plans to build two new fire stations for $13 million last September after years of discussion. In addition to the $5.8 million Fire Station 15, Fire Station 16 is expected to be relocated from Plum Grove Road to a new building on Hicks Road.

According to Fire Chief Terry Valentino, moving to the new locations will allow firefighters to reach residents anywhere in the city within four to six minutes. He said service was not expected to be interrupted due to the move, and that Palatine and Schaumburg fire departments agreed to cover any calls during the switch.

Participants at the “Firefighter for a Day” training program were all medical professionals, including physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons, who spent a day walking in the shoes of their patients. Wearing complete firefighting gear, they crawled through simulations of burning buildings, advanced hose lines into a heated fire environment, and learned how to transport a victim from a second-floor fire.

Working alongside of them were firefighters from Hanover Park, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, Des Plaines, and Rolling Meadows. The daylong session took place at the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy in Glenview and was organized by the Rolling Meadows Fire Department.

Fire department are working with a new provider network committed to caring for ~~first responders~~ emergency personnel and getting them back on the job as quickly as possible. The philosophy is the brainchild of the Milwaukee-based Tactical Athlete Health and Performance Institute, or TAHPI. The institute was started in 2010 by a physical therapist who formerly worked with major league baseball players. By connecting firefighters to medical specialists who are committed to preventing injury sooner, they are saving the communities they serve in overtime costs, workers’ compensation, and health care.

Last year the access to medical care managed by TAHPI saved the city of Milwaukee around $2.3 million.

A Rolling Meadows firefighter who sustained a back injury last December saw an orthopedic specialist the next day and went for a physical therapy assessment that afternoon because of the city’s enrollment in TAHPI. That week, he eventually was referred to a physical therapist near his home and was back to work in three weeks.

Rolling Meadows was among the first suburban departments to partner with TAHPI, and the other departments who helped out at the training session also signed up. They are among 40 departments in five states who now treat their ~~first responders~~ police officers, firefighters, and paramedics as athletes.

The City of Rolling Meadows will soon have 10 new automatic external defibrillators (AED) in public areas of city buildings that can help prevent or mitigate cardiac events by sending electric currents through the heart.

Aldermen unanimously approved the approximately $14,000 purchase from Physio-Control Inc. The company is a division of Stryker, which maintains the city’s seven Life Pak 15 external cardiac monitors.

By trading in four of the previously-used devices, the city was able to save over $1,000 on the purchase. Though the devices are not often used, one AED has been used at a public ice arena in Rolling Meadows, and its use resulted in a cardiac save.

Rolling Meadows firefighters were sent to 2905 W. Algonquin Road Wednesday afternoon (4/24/19) for smoke in the building. This was the Egg’lectic Cafe. The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 and later a MABAS Box Alarm when fire was discovered in the attic. The fire was contained to the attic area. An incomplete list of companies at the scene included: Rolling Meadows Engines 15 and 16, Ambulances 15 and 16, plus Battalion 15 and the department chiefs; Palatine Engine 84, Tower 84, Squad 85, Battalion 8, and two chief officers; Arlington Heights Tower 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Ambulance 3, and a chief officer; Palatine Rural Engine 36 and a chief officer; Schaumburg Engine 52 and Squad 55; Elk Grove Township Engine 11; Elk Grove Village Engine 10, Mount Prospect Tower 13; Buffalo Grove Ambulance 25; and a Rosemont ambulance.

The City of Rolling Meadows, IL Fire Department’s Velocity 500-gallon 107’ single-axle Ascendant ladder features an elevated stand pipe connection on the aerial tip, fold-out steps for safety, and exterior cab compartmentation for fire extinguishers. To increase compartment storage the department removed the PS stairs. This aerial carries a total of 127’ of ground ladders. The pump house was modified to incorporate a 2-section 35’ ladder.

Rolling Meadows officials have inked a new three-year labor agreement with city firefighter/paramedics and lieutenants who will earn annual salary increases of 2.5 percent.

The agreement, unanimously approved this week by the city council and ratified earlier by members of Rolling Meadows Professional Firefighters International Association of Firefighters Local 3075, also provides extra pay for longevity and those who volunteer to work as a community paramedic within a new mobile integrated health care pilot program. The initiative, coordinated by Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights in partnership with the Palatine and Palatine Rural fire departments, enlists paramedics to make house calls for some patients.

The wage increases mirror those approved by the council in July under first-time contracts for two employee unions that include secretaries, inspectors, and public works staff. The new fire contract begins Jan. 1 and runs through 2021. The police union contract, still being negotiated, expires at the end of the year.

Rolling Meadows officials unveiled renderings of the city’s two new fire stations along with a $13 million budget estimate, $4 million more than estimates developed at least five years ago, for how much the relocation plan will cost.

The price of acquiring land for the two stations was more than predicted, along with the expected cost of stormwater detention. Another higher expense is for a vehicle exhaust system that will be installed in the stations. The city plans to pay for the project by issuing general obligation bonds. Preliminary plans discussed Tuesday involve borrowing $13 million for the fire stations and another $2 million to $7 million for roads and utilities citywide.

Under one scenario, the city could do a $10 million bond issue this year, and another $5 million to $10 million issue next year. The city has hiked its property tax levy 4.8 percent in each of the last two years — mainly to fund police and fire pensions and roads, and another levy increase is probable.

The city is planning to build the new firehouses to replace the two existing stations, with a goal of improving response times and reducing fire risk throughout town. Station 15, at 3111 Meadow Drive, was built in 1958, and Station 16, at 2455 S. Plum Grove Road, was built in 1980. The site plans for both stations is similar.

Last month, crews completed demolition of a restaurant at 3201 Algonquin Road, where construction is set to begin in August on the new 12,700-square-foot Station 15. The city is now closing on property at 2320-2350 Hicks Road for the new 12,900-square-foot Station 16, for which construction would start 6-8 weeks after work begins on Station 15. The Hicks Road site has yet to be cleared of two buildings.

Officials expect to go out to bid in the next month. Construction of the stations could take 18 months.
