Working fire in Prospect Heights, 12-28-18

This from the Prospect Heights Fire District:

Prospect Heights firefighters were dispatched at 25 minutes after midnight to a reported fire at 107 North Schoenbeck Road after a passerby spotted smoke coming from the roof area. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the building was charged with smoke and smoke was coming from multiple areas of the roof. A quick search of the building determined it was unoccupied and the fire was in the crawlspace. The fire was quickly extinguished without extension into the walls or ceiling.

During the initial fire attack, one firefighter fell through a hole in the floor into the crawlspace. The firefighter was not injured and was immediately assisted out of the crawlspace.

Prospect Heights firefighters were assisted at the scene by Wheeling, Mt Prospect, Arlington Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine Rural, Elk Grove Township, Des Plaines, and Long Grove firefighters. This area of Prospect Heights is not serviced by hydrants so tankers from the Palatine Rural and the Elk Grove Township fire districts were requested to reinforce efforts.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Prospect Heights police were able to locate the homeowner who is not currently residing in the home apparently due to renovations underway. Much of the home sustained smoke and water damage.

As of 3:00AM the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

New tanker for Prospect Heights (more)

The 1994 Spartan/S&S Tanker is DOA. During its annual maintenance inspection, it was discovered that there was fracturing of the oak planks that are part of the mounting between the tank frame and chassis frame. The vehicle was sent to Alexis Fire Equipment for repair. When the tank was removed as part of the work it was then found that both chassis frame rails and both tank frame rails were severely corroded. The cost to repair the tank (of which the body was part) was tens of thousands of dollars. The chassis frame was determined to be not repairable as it had pitting along the top and deep pitting on the sides. The side pitting was in the location of the suspension mounts and was deeper than half the thickness of the frame. The top pitting ran the entire length of each frame rail. In some spots, when struck with a welding hammer the areas deepened further.
