Excerpts from the journaltopics.com:
A new Mako Air Compressor used to fill firefighters’ oxygen tanks was installed at Niles Fire Station No. 2 late last month thanks to a $55,000 competitive federal grant awarded a year ago.
The federal grant, applied for in 2017, required a 10 percent local match, meaning the village paid a little more than $5,600 for the machine including installation. The $55,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Assistance To Firefighters grant paid the remaining costs for the compressor.
Before the new unit was installed Aug. 21, firefighters used one air compressor to fill tanks at Station 3 on Jarvis Avenue. Station 2 is located at Dempster Street and Cumberland Avenue. Transporting and topping off oxygen air bottles at Station 3 on a regular basis was inefficient and wasted about 40 minutes in driving time between the two fire stations. The new system will improve readiness and save time and money.
Recently the department was awarded a $56,000 grant from the same program, applied for in 2018, for cardiovascular fitness equipment, which would need to be purchased and installed before Aug. 21, 2020.

Excerpts from the Journal-Topics.com:
Niles firefighters suspect a lightning strike as the cause of a fire in a home in the 8300 block of Ballard Road Thursday morning (July 18). Residents in the home heard a loud bang, followed by lights flickering. The lightning strike ignited the fire in a small void space between the home’s vaulted ceilings and the roof itself. Firefighters used pike poles to pull down sections of ceiling to expose and extinguish the flames.
All residents evacuated safely, there were no injuries, and the fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes.

Excerpts from the Journal-Topics.com:
Niles firefighters responded to a fire alarm at 12:32 p.m. at the Microlink plant, 6457 Howard St., when they found a small fire in the northwest area of the building. Firefighters found that workers were cleaning a 30-gallon drum containing phosphorus at or near the area of the fire, causing phosphine gas to release from the drum. Phosphine gas is poisonous and an irritant if inhaled.
About 40 workers evacuated the plant when automated alarms in the building sounded. Although everyone from the plant had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, several employees were unaccounted for causing firefighters to search the building. Those workers were later found safe outside the plant.
Several workers were evaluated, but none were transported to the hospital. Firefighters deployed hazardous material decontamination pools.

Excerpts from the Journal-topics.com:
Niles trustees approved the donation of a 1996 fire engine to Ford Heights at the July 10 village board meeting. The engine was taken out of service in 2015 when the fire department purchased a new one. The last time the village tried to sell a used engine of a similar vintage, a village memo and Fire Chief Marty Feld said it took three years to sell — and sold for scrap for less than $3,000.
Ford Heights has just one working fire engine, meaning if that engine goes out of service, other communities must be called upon to respond to any fire related calls. The Niles engine will become Ford Heights’ second engine. The donation is being coordinated through the state fire marshal’s office.
Another new engine Feld hopes to purchase this fall would cost somewhere between $600,000 and $700,000. It would leave the Niles Fire Dept. with two engines in reserve, one 2013 and one 2001. Those vehicles are used if frontline units are out for repairs, or if off-duty firefighters are called in to respond or fill stations.
Vehicles are generally replaced on a 20-year cycle.
