Overall look pretty good, hate the short front bumper & yes, the round taillights are dumb.

The issue is that Fleet, 2FM, AIS, call them what you want and Finance departments are in charge of specing, purchasing and maintaining the CFD fleet of apparatus. These departments are not interested in CFD input or control of said fleet. We (CFD) can say whatever we want it doesn’t matter. Not one bit, the CFD has no control over any part of the process of these rigs. As we are consistently told these are not our rigs we just use them. The city has other priorities that do not include monies for a compliant fire apparatus fleet. We as a department just continue to make due with what we’re given. And the mechanics are overwhelmed as well short staff overworked with minimal parts and 25+ year old rigs to keep running 20+ runs a day every day. The City of Chicago doesn’t care that we are woefully equipped. That’s the truth so we don’t care about the taillights that are on the rigs as long as they are safe and able to handle our daily needs, which a good portion are not.

“What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
Long live the ’55 Snorkel Squad.

Not trying to start anything. But I read Chicago spent 500 million on illegal immigrants. A 1/4 of that could have gone a long way with apparatus. Just saying.

Both Boston Rescue Co.s operate E-One squad apparatus. The KME is a reserve.

If my mind doesn’t fail me, wasn’t this record played in 2016. When the E/One contract was just getting started. The fleet was in disrepair back then so what was the reason to close the Fire Department Shop? The whole shop went to City Fleet. I thought it was for a constant stream of checks and balances to keep the fleet in good working order. And the ability to inact a steady replacement program for new apparatus. Spartan fell through when it was sold and their quality went down. E/One has improved and is selling and building a better product. Besides I was checking out Boston the other day and they also have an all E/One fleet. Their oldest Engines and Trucks are less than 10 years old. So What are they doing right and what is Chicago doing wrong. You now have Towers coming up to 10 years old and the Squads that are over 10 years. There’s where the problem lies. Those rigs should be heading to the spare pool. Does Boston buy through a consortium too? Boston isn’t as big as Chicago and they also have an old city with older building stock. They might very well have a stricter driver training program. Maybe the city fathers like the Fire Department. I’m not sure if Chicago does. Maybe it’s still bad blood from the Strike? Is Fleet the red headed step child? In the city? Are they having trouble getting good help? Only the Lord knows. It still baffles me that the Snorkel is still around. The Towers are good but why buy Medium duty Aerials? If you added some pre-piped waterway Trucks to each Battalion the Towers would not be ridden so hard thus diminishing their service life. You don’t need Aerial Towers just 100 foot Trucks maybe mid mount or Tillers. As the city gets older and the houses age the problems are not going to go away. Okay I’m done. Take care. Happy Holidays!

In reality, those lights save almost no money. I’m just glad the city is getting some new apparatus. Unfortunately, they have a looooong way to go before their fleet is remotely adequate.

Rj, there’s nothing cheap about apparatus today. So little changes have been made to cut some costs off these builds and to streamline any possible costs of parts. Also the availability of certain parts can be an issue since fleet no longer stocks parts. The current situation with apparatus is beyond dire. We are past the tipping point. My rig has no heat and there are no parts and no plans for repair. So some round taillights are no big deal. I really don’t think people understand how bad it is. It will take 20 years to recover from the current state of apparatus, and that’s if the city starts buying rigs at a fast pace, which they will not

Looks cheap especially from the back. Litte round lights for brake/turn signals?

I have a feeling that after people wake up, the city will find a way to replace apparatus in a better timely manner. A lot of people aren’t aware of what’s happening to the fleet. Spread the information out far and wide.

Well the smaller rigs are just what we need. The ALF’s were to big and had so many issues they were always oos. These will be two piece rigs to separate the equipment on two rigs instead of overloading one rig.

Good to see them replacing rigs in such and old fleet. I wish they were longer like the ALFs they have now rather than the spare (G510). Overall they look great and I can’t wait to see them in service
