2/26/18 MAPLE PARK – Kaneville FPD (DeKalb FD’s district) Garbage-Hauling Semi Fire WB I-88 MM 100.25 (near Keslinger Rd.) – Video by Dave Weaver
Excerpts from the Daily-Chronicle.com:
Illinois State Police and firefighters from DeKalb and Big Rock responded about 9:30 a.m. to westbound I-88 near Maple Park for a truck fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters wet the flaming trash, which was contained to the back of the truck, on the side of the interstate until there was little risk that the fire would flare up again, DeKalb Deputy Fire Chief Jeff McMaster said.
The driver, who was not injured in the incident, then drove the truck to the DeKalb County landfill, 18370 Somonauk Road, Cortland, after authorities determined it was safe to drive. The truck was already close to its destination. Only one lane was shut down, while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
Firefighters from the Cortland Fire Department completely extinguished the garbage after it was unloaded in a secure area.

3/13/18 AURORA – Two Critical from Head-On SUV vs. Van Crash w/ Double Entrapment Bilter Rd. between Eola Rd. and DuPage Pkwy.
The Aurora Police Traffic Division investigated a two-vehicle, head-on crash that occurred around 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 that critically injured two Aurora men. The preliminary investigation indicates that a 21-year-old man was driving a 2014 Ford Explorer westbound on Bilter Rd. when it crossed the center line and hit an eastbound 2006 GMC Savana about two-tenths of a mile east of Wilton Ln. The Savana was being driven by a 48-year-old man. The men were the only occupants of their respective vehicles and both had to be extricated by Aurora firefighters. Both were transported by ground ambulance to a suburban hospital for critical, but non-life threatening injuries. No citations had been issued in the day following the crash pending further investigation. It was not clear if alcohol or drugs played a factor. Bilter Rd. between DuPage Pkwy. and the I-88 Eola Rd. Tollway ramp were closed for several hours while the crash was reconstructed. Volunteers from Aurora Emergency Management assisted with traffic control. – Video by Dave Weaver

2/22/18 SAINT CHARLES – Woman Rescued from Apartment Fire at Carroll Tower 200 N. 2nd St.
At 10:39 PM the St. Charles FD was dispatched to an activated fire alarm at the Carroll Tower apartment building. Firefighters arrived at 10:41 PM and found a working kitchen fire on the second floor of the six-story building. The female occupant was unable to exit the fire apartment. The incident was then upgraded to a General Alarm to bring additional resources to the scene. Firefighters removed the victim from the fire apartment and transported her to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva with non-life-threatening injuries. The sprinkler system held the fire in check in the kitchen and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in approximately 15 minutes. There was a considerable amount of smoke throughout the second floor and firefighters remained on the scene until approximately 12:15 AM evacuating smoke, assisting the occupants of the remaining second floor units back to their apartments and conducting the fire investigation. Some of the occupants of the building had been evacuated to the lobby and some were sheltered in place as firefighters were able to rapidly extinguish the fire. The fire was contained to the kitchen of the apartment of origin and there were no other injuries to the occupants or to firefighters. The cause of the fire is attributed to combustible materials being left on a stove top and is considered accidental. Fire loss is estimated at $50,000. The St. Charles FD was assisted on the scene by the Geneva, Batavia, and Elburn fire departments. The North Aurora FD changed quarters to Saint Charles to assist with any additional incidents while units were operating at the fire. Video by Dave Weaver.
