Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
A 21-year-old Crystal Lake man slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler at 1:25 a.m. Friday and is being treated for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor/trailer was heading west on Lake Cook Road, and stopped at a red light at Hicks Road. When the light turned green, the trucker accelerated, but the Crystal Lake man’s 2013 Volkwagen Golf came up from behind and wedged itself under the trailer.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District led the rescue that followed. The car was wedged under the rear trailer of a semi-tractor/trailer unit all the way up to the start of the rear passenger-seat door. The rescue took more than an hour, involving three hydraulic tools, airbags, a tow truck, and two requests for helicopters. At 2:38 a.m., firefighters loaded the driver into an ambulance, and transported him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating whether the driver had been using drugs or alcohol, or driving while distracted.
