Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from cbsnews.com:

Two firefighters and a civilian were injured in a fire in the South Shore neighborhood Monday evening.

The fire broke out on the second floor of a three-story, multi-unit apartment building in the 1400 block of East 69th Place. Two people jumped out the second-floor window to escape the fire before firefighters came. They were not injured.

A staircase collapsed resulting in the fire department losing communication with some members. A mayday was called, but everyone was ultimately accounted for.

A woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center from the scene in good condition, while two firefighters were also transported to the same hospital with minor injuries, though the firefighters’ injuries were not related to the mayday.

The cause and origin of the fire remained under investigation late Monday, Walker said. The building was left uninhabitable by the fire, but it was not immediately known how many people were displaced.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from wgntv.com:

The old Chicago Tribune printing plant known as the Freedom Center will soon be home to the new Bally’s Hotel and Casino, but before then it is a perfect training ground for the Chicago Fire Department.

Under the command of 1st District Chief Jim McDonough, firefighters train on everything from trying to find someone in a dark, smoke-filled room to rescuing a troubled window washer, elevator and machinery rescues and more.

The casino interior demo and overall construction is now the responsibility of Bally’s Chicago Community Builders Collective, a joint venture of nine separate companies. After reaching out to Bally’s and it’s collective of contractors in charge of the demo and the build, the opportunity to use the 6-story site for training was granted.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from wgntv.com:

A young Chicago firefighter is stable after being injured in a crash while riding a motorcycle, but remains unconscious following his surgery.

Mason Maj’s loved ones have not left his bedside and are urgently asking the community to help them put together the moments before he was hurt. They are hoping someone can answer their call as they search for clarity after Mason was critically injured in a crash while riding a motorcycle on Friday morning. His family said Mason left his home early Friday morning to avoid traffic and was on his way to Franklin Park.

Chicago police said at around 6:30 a.m., Mason rear-ended a Nissan near Addison and Narrangansett in the Portage Park neighborhood, leaving him severely injured. The family hopes that neighbors or drivers who were in the area at the time of the crash saw something and can help fill in the details about the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Since the crash, Mason has been receiving care a Lutheran General Hospital.

Mason graduated from the fire academy in June and serves as a firefighter with Engine 93, following the footsteps of his father who is a captain with Engine 26.

A GoFundMe has been created to help with Mason’s medical expenses.

Chicago Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from ABC7chicago.com:

The Chicago Fire Department celebrated new paramedics at a graduation last week, but some officials inside the department say it’s not enough.

Matt Clohessy is a Paramedic in Charge for Ambulance 10 on Chicago’s West Side. He said he and other PICs are often asked to work on their days off.

“We need more ambulances. We need more help out there,” Clohessy said. “Although we have great jobs, we are super lucky to work here… some days in the summer I’ll have 37-39 runs under my belt by the time it’s time to go home.”=

The city’s firefighters and paramedics have worked for three years without a new contract. While those discussions are ongoing, union officials are urging for more pay for paramedics to take on supervisory roles. They are also simply asking for more paramedics.

The city, which negotiates the firefighters contract, has not responded to ABC7’s request for a comment.

Firefighters plan to make their appeal for help more public at a march on Michigan Avenue during the NASCAR Street Race July 6.

4-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-19-24

Excerpts from wgntv.com:

Chicago firefighters battled a 4-11 Alarm fire that began around 6 p.m. in the city’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. All people inside the structure were evacuated before firefighters arrived, with all being accounted for once CFD got the fire under control.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

CFD also said the structure, in the 2800 block of West Grand Avenue, contained a construction office complex, an active body shop, a landscaping company, and a car battery operation along with a number of other small businesses, and was a complete loss as a result of the fire.

Approximately 200 firefighters and 40 pieces of equipment responded to the fire Wednesday evening, a number of which were also at the scene of the West Town commercial fire late into Tuesday evening this week.

The Humboldt Park fire was also just a little more than a mile from Tuesday’s fire at a commercial pallet company fire in West Town.
