Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

An off-duty Chicago firefighter died on Sunday morning after being pulled out of Lake Michigan at 31st Street Beach.

CFD responded to the beach about 7:30 a.m. for a call of a marine distress, and crews pulled a man from the water, who was in critical condition.

Sadly, the man, later identified by his family as Wilbert Hayes, did not make it. It was not immediately clear what led to his distress.

Hayes, who had just ended a shift with the Chicago Fire Department before going to the beach with his family, died at University of Chicago Medical Center. He had been on the job since 2009.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

On Thursday, the Quinn Fire Academy was flooded with dozens of young girls for the annual firefighter for a day, and the event is making an impact throughout the city.

Chicago has only had one female fire commissioner in its history, but, in a couple years, there could be more, due to the over 70 girls who stopped by the academy.

“My parents said, ‘no that job is not for you,’ and I said, ‘watch,'” Deborah Sommer said. Thirty four years later, she’s district chief of diversity and inclusion. Sommer said she didn’t have programs like this growing up.

Data show only 9% of Chicago firefighters are women, and less than 2% are Black women.

The very first female firefighter in Chicago wasn’t hired until 1974.

The district chief said the department has come a long way, but still has a lot farther to go.

Request for information …

I am curious about a type of unit operated by the Chicago Fire Dept.  They are designated as rescue companies and consist of two trucks.  One of the trucks carries a 55′ aerial platform.  Why are there two trucks?  Why does a rescue carry an aerial platform?  What type of equipment does each truck carry?  Does the CFD also operate “normal” type rescues?

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from fox32chicago.com:

A man was taken into custody after opening fire on an ambulance that was blocking his way Wednesday night in the Logan Square neighborhood.

The 34-year-old got out of his car around 9:32 p.m. in the 2600 block of North Hamlin Avenue and yelled for an ambulance in front of him to move out of his way.

“He bangs on the [ambulance] window and can’t get in, starts yelling at the neighbor back and forth. [He] gets in his car, reverses and starts shooting maybe six times,” said a witness who did not want to be identified.

He then pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the rear doors of the ambulance before speeding away. No one was struck by gunfire or injured.

Officers pulled over a vehicle matching his car description and took him into custody, and a gun was recovered from the vehicle.

Area Five detectives are investigating.

The Chicago Fire Department hosted the National EMS Memorial Service procession on Wednesday morning as part of their cross-country trip to Arlington, Virginia.

Fifty-nine fallen emergency medical services personnel were honored during a stop on the route at Firefighter Memorial Park near the lakefront trail.

The procession marks the countdown to the National EMS Memorial Service and Weekend of Honor which recognizes EMS personne who have died in the line of duty.

The National EMS Memorial Service was founded in 1993. Their mission is to build a National EMS Memorial in Washington D.C. that will “commemorate the ongoing commitment, service and sacrifice of the Nation’s Emergency Medical Services providers killed, injured, or disabled in the line of duty and for all those that continue to serve.”

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Chicago firefighters were killed in a massive fire on Milwaukee Avenue in February 1985, and on Sunday, their community gave back, remembering their sacrifice.

Captain Daniel Nockels and Firefighters Michael Forchione and Michael Talley were honored with a renovated mural at a park at Diversey, Kimball, and Milwaukee avenues, just down the street from where the deadly fire broke out.

“Thirty-eight years, five months, eight days. For those of us who survived the tragedy of that frigid cold night, the space of time is hard to comprehend,” said Firefighter Paul Nockels, the son of Daniel Nockels. “I miss my father every day.”

The original mural was painted in the mid-1980s and retouched in the early 2000s. South Shore artist Damon Lamar Reed was commissioned for the new version.

Michael Forchione went to work on his 29th birthday and never returned home. His children, just babies when their father died, joined their mother, Cynthia Forchione, at the podium on Sunday as she thanked her husband’s fellow firefighters and the community for their unwavering support.

“May all who enjoy this park, please never forget those that have gave that ultimate sacrifice and gone ahead of us,” said Truck 58 Lieutenant James Hampe with Firefighters Local 2.
