Cary Fire Protection District news

From the Cary Fire Protection District:

The Cary Fire Protection District sadly announces the passing of retired Deputy Chief William “Bill” Gitzke. Bill, 76, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 15, 2019 surrounded by family.

He was born February 15, 1943 in his parents’ home on West Main Street in Cary.

His faith was of utmost importance to him.  Bill was an active member of Cary’s St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he attended school and was an alter boy.

He attended Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin and went on to attend the electronics and technology program at DeVry University in Chicago.  Bill was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 being stationed in Germany until he returned home in 1967.

After returning from the Army, Bill married the love of his life, Carol.  Together they raised two children, a daughter, Shelly Van Anrooy and son William “Billy” Gitzke.

Bill owned and operated G Communications, where he installed and repaired communications systems for public safety agencies across Illinois.  He was well known and respected throughout the county for his knowledge of communications equipment.

Bill followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a paid-on-call member of the Cary Fire Protection District in 1961.  After completing firefighter and emergency medical technician training, he was promoted to lieutenant, then captain, then assistant chief, and finally deputy chief, the department’s second in command.

Being a firefighter was not just a career to him, it was a life long passion.  Bill always went above and beyond the call of duty.  After serving 51 years, Bill retired from the Cary Fire Protection District in February 2013, becoming the longest serving member in the department’s history.  Bill’s love of the fire service continued to be a family tradition when his son Billy, became the third generation of Gitzke’s to serve the Cary Fire Protection District.  Father and son worked side by side for 15 years.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol, daughter Shelly Van Anrooy, son William Gitzke, grandchildren Brenna and Chase Van Anrooy, Katelyn, Samantha, Grace, Billy, and Joey Gitzke, his sister Linda Verdung, and many relatives on both sides of the family.

Cary Fire Protection District news (more)

Excerpts from the NorthwestHerald.com:

Three Cary firefighters injured during a house fire Friday have been released from the hospital, and two of them have returned to work.

The Cary Fire Protection District was called about 8:27 p.m. to a fire at 206 Hickory Nut Grove Lane, where one firefighter fell from the first floor into the basement of the home, one was injured trying to help the firefighter who fell, and another firefighter received an electrical shock.

The firefighter who fell through the floor was taken to Advocate Good Shepard Hospital in Barrington and was released, but has not returned to work. The other two firefighters were taken to the same hospital and later released.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Macko said that to the best of his knowledge, the firefighters followed protocol during the fire, including sounding the floor to determine its stability. The department’s safety committee is running an internal safety review.

Because of the injuries, the Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

2-Alarm brush fire in Hawthorn Woods. 10-18-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to a field of cattails burning Sunday in Hawthorn Woods. The field was surrounded by homes and access to opposite sides of the field was several blocks away. They requested a MABAS Box Alarm for assistance and later upgraded to the 2nd Alarm due to the large area and access issues. The address used for the incident was 8 Westwind Court.

I arrived after the 2nd Alarm companies to find the fire was already out. Here are the few images that I took at the scene.

New squad for Cary (update)

From Michael Douglass:

Here are some updated photos of our new squad that is being built at the SVI plant in Colorado.  Initially we were not expecting to receive the new squad until late summer or early fall, but it is well ahead of schedule and we are expecting it to be delivered at the end of May or early June.  The new squad is a SVI body on a Sutphen Ambassador chassis.  Our squad committee went last weekend to view the progress and these photos were taken by Deputy Chief Brad Delatorre.  There are more photos of the squad on the SVI website under the “watch your truck being built” link at:  www.svitrucks.com.

New squad for Cary FPD – update

This from Michael D. Douglass:

Hey guys some progress has been made on the new squad we have on order.  The squad is an SVI body on a Sutphen Ambassador chassis.  The chassis is scheduled to arrive at the SVI plant next week.  The plan is to have the squad completed by early fall, however as of right now they are ahead of schedule so it may be ready sooner.

Attached find a PDF of the preliminary graphics from SVI.  The graphics have been approved with the only exception being that the lettering will be done in gold leaf instead of the orange used in the graphic.  I have also attached a photo of the body sub frame and 6 photos on the fabrication from SVI.  These photos can also be viewed on SVI’s website under the “watch your truck being built” photo gallery area at:  www.svitrucks.com.

As I get additional updates I will send them to you.   Thanks.

Yours in Fire Safety,

Michael D. Douglass
