Barrington Countryside FPD news (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

In early March, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District agreed to a contract with Northwest Central Dispatch System (NWCDS).

The agreement, in part, means firefighters with Barrington Countryside will be able to communicate more effectively with other departments that are a part of NWCDS, which serves nearly 500,000 people spanning more than 170 square miles.

Police and fire departments in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Inverness, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Schaumburg are all with NWCDS.

Barrington Countryside FPD Deputy Chief Don Wenschhof said the fire protection district agreed to a per-call fee in the new contract with Northwest Central Dispatch System, making it difficult to compare costs under the district’s former agreement with Round Lake Beach-based CenCom.

The per-call fee amounts to $58.53, while no entry fee was charged under the agreement with Northwest Central Dispatch System.

The cost to work with NWCDS may ultimately be more for the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District but firefighters thought the services offered were worth the expense, he said.

From 2014 to 2016, Barrington Countryside averaged about 1,857 emergency calls a year to CenCom, according to CenCom.

Barrington Countryside FPD news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

At the beginning of the month, The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District left CenCom 9-1-1 to join  Northwest Central Dispatch System.

Deputy Fire Chief Donald Wenschhof III said the switch provides stronger, wider-ranging radio coverage throughout the district.

Barrington Countryside serves portions of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington and Inverness; and portions of unincorporated Cook, Lake and McHenry counties.

The district used CenCom’s services since its split from the Barrington Fire Department in 2014.

Video (part 1) from Larry Shapiro 4-Alarm house fire in Barrington Hills – 1-30-17

Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

A large house that was being expanded was a total loss Tuesday morning, after an immense fire in west suburban Barrington, while the family was overseas on vacation. An addition being built onto the 3,800-square-foot home appeared to be about 2,000 square feet.

By the time neighbors saw the fire, it had already grown quite large.

The fire started around 2 a.m. at a home at the end of a quarter-mile driveway on Cuba Road between Old Barrington Road and Route 59. A total of 30 suburban fire departments were called to the scene with more than 100 firefighters.

Barrington Countryside FPD news (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The location of a proposed third station for the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District has officials at Barrington School District 220 concerned about traffic congestion and loud noises.

For $500,000, the fire protection district purchased an acre of land, which includes an existing home, at 36 E. Dundee Road, located between Barrington Middle School — Prairie Campus and the Early Learning Center at District 220.

The fire district has said it plans to turn the home into its third fire station but run limited operations there.

But with the close proximity to District 220 schools, officials said they are working with the fire district to address their concerns about increased traffic and noise if the station opens.

School officials are concerned about traffic congestion when parents drop their children off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. The sounds of sirens also could disturb younger students in class. District 220 officials intended to buy the property to help improve traffic flow between the two buildings.

The proposed third station for the fire district wouldn’t feature fire trucks but could include administrative offices and beds for firefighters on shift at the facility, officials with the fire district have said.

The location would help improve response times throughout the area, particularly with medical calls involving heart attack and stroke victims, said Keith Hanson, board president at the fire protection district. Those make up about 85 percent of the district’s calls.

Instead of a fire truck, the district would look to house an SUV that could be used as a rapid response unit. It would be outfitted with life support equipment for heart attack and stroke victims.

“The key to responding to heart attacks and strokes is getting two people on scene very quickly and starting (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) or appropriate stroke treatment,” he said.

Addressing some concerns of the school district, the fire protection district would limit the use of the SUV to about two calls a day, Hanson said. Firefighters also will use the sirens in select instances where traffic needs to be moved.

Fire Chief Jim Kreher said the third station would help improve response times throughout the district’s territory.

“We cover 48 square miles and this station will help us respond to residents more efficiently,” Kreher said. “We also help out the fire department in Barrington and the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District.”

Hanson said the fire district could conceivably expand operations at the third station in the future, bringing in more personnel and equipment. But for now, district board members have budgeted $2 million to upgrade and open the station by the spring.

Barrington Countryside FPD news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

A house between Barrington Middle School’s Prairie Campus and the Barrington Area Unit School District 220 Early Learning Center on Dundee Road could soon be a small fire station, according to Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District officials.

Fire Chief James Kreher said the fire district is in the process of closing on the house fairly soon.

Representatives from the fire district and the school district have met a few times since September to talk about how the two can work together so their facilities can coexist and maybe even collaborate in the future.

One of the things they’ve discussed is working together to make it easier for the school district to move their buses around on the property. There are about 1,500 students between Prairie Middle School and the Early Learning Center, making the busing operation the second largest in the district.

Kreher said options range from leaving the house there and modifying the garage so it can house a fire truck or two, or leveling the structures and building new ones.
