Gurnee Fire Department Fire Station #3

Excerpts from Gurneeil.us:

The Village of Gurnee and Warren Waukegan Fire Protection District Celebrate the Grand Opening of Fire Station 3

GURNEE, IL – The Village of Gurnee and the Warren Waukegan Fire Protection District (WWFPD) celebrated the grand opening of Fire Station 3, located at 5330 Manchester Drive Gurnee, IL 60031 with a ribbon cutting and celebration on Wednesday, October 13th at 1:00pm. Fire Station 3 compliments the two current fire station facilities serving the Village of Gurnee and the WWFPD. At 14,452 sq ft, the new fire station will be staffed with five firefighter/paramedics, and house two ambulances and one ladder truck.

The Village of Gurnee conducted multiple analyses and planned for the addition over several years. The strategic location of the facility will improve call response times, especially as multiple calls for service come in simultaneously, and provides for easy access on to Interstate 94 and Route-120.

In 2019, the original bid for the project came in at approximately $6.3M. Fire Station 3 was included in the 20/21 capital budget, however it was one of the expenditures delayed in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to construction and supply trends around June 2020, the contractor suggested the village seek bids for construction. Following the advisement, bids came in at $5.8M. Despite the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on all aspects of the economy and daily life, the construction of Station 3 was not affected.

Kenosha Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the kenoshanews.com:

Work is continuing at the construction site of the new Kenosha Fire Department Fire Station No. 4, located at 4810 60th St. The new building, adjacent to the current station, will be twice the size at 29,344-square-feet and will include an additional 10,000-square foot tower for training purposes. The construction contract in the amount of $9.97 million was awarded to Stuckey Construction, of Waukegan, Ill. The completion of the project was slated for May 2022, but is ahead of schedule. According to Fire Chief Christopher Bigley, the Kenosha Fire Department “may get the keys in February.” If the building is finished by that time, operations will be fully run out of the new station in March.

Decatur Fire Department news

Excerpts from the Herald-Review.com:

On Monday, the doors of Fire Station 3, the oldest working station in Decatur, were closed as firefighters and their equipment were moved around the corner to the new Fire Station 6 in Fairview Plaza.

The building is nearly 100 years old, with additions being made throughout the years. The station was built in 1927, originally labeled Station 6. It was a mirror-image of another station on the corner of Clay and 22nd streets, which closed years ago. The day room, kitchen and training room were in one small room on the main level with a dorm room for sleeping located in the upstairs area.

The new station has modern facilities, with individual rooms for firefighters and more space for equipment and living areas.

For Deputy Chief Jim Ohl, the move is bittersweet. He spent more than 18 years of his career at the old station working with the same group of firefighters for nearly 10 years.

Plans for another new building, Station 7, are in the works at Chestnut and 36th streets. The fate of the old Station 3 is unknown at this time.
