Yes Scott, Seagrave is just about the oldest fire apparatus manufacturer. They have been around for many years as well as being known for quality apparatus, however they have lost alot of business in recent years from some of their biggest customers. For example while Seagrave still supplies New York City with Aerialscope tower ladders and tillered aerials, the last several contracts for rear mounted ladders have gone to Ferrara. When it comes New York City’s newest engine orders they have gone to KME for the last few years. I believe that New York’s latest squad/pumper orders have gone to Seagrave, but New York only runs with seven of them along with 198 engine companies.
As for the Los Angeles City Fire Department, their last order of Seagrave engines was in 2006. It was a split order for 13 Seagraves and 13 Pierces. They have had 54 KME pumpers delivered since 2010. The last time that LA City ordered an aerial ladder from Seagrave was in 1990 and that was for only two. When Chicago finally gets rid of their fleet of spare Seagrave ladders that were delivered in 1993, 1995, and 1996, they will probably be the last of Chicago’s Seagraves. I don’t think Seagrave even submitted a bid for the last round of Chicago’s ladders.
Seagrave still sells ladders and engines to Washington DC and to Louisville, Kentucky which are among their best customers. Some good news for Seagrave is that they have sold engines and ladders to Albuquerque, New Mexico that are replacing some Pierce apparatus. Other then that it appears that Seagrave has been pricing themselves out of the market.

Anyone can build a stainless steel rig. It all comes down to the specs. Seagrave has been doing such for many decades (FDNY). Also stainless steel pumps can also be built by spec. DARLEY has built stainless pumps as well for decades!

Andy thanks for sending the link on the Hamburg plant and thanks to everyone else for the information.
Speaking of E/One, I don’t know how many of you know that the last time the CFD asked for bids for aerial ladders, bids were requested 3 separate times over a period of about a year. The bids were rejected twice. On the third round E/One was the lowest of 4 bidders yet the contract was given to Spartan Erv, the second highest bidder.
I know that Pierce has been the largest apparatus builder in terms of sales but would any of you know what order the next largest manufacturers currently are. I guess that E/One would probably come in second but Sparten ERV has been acquiring more companies such as Smeal. Ferrara, Rosenbauer, and even KME seem to have been making more sales the last few years. Seagrave is still around but they have definitely lost alot of business over the last 20 years.

Bill,
It is the old R.D. Murray Plant in Hamburg, New York. Which is a suburb of Buffalo. E-One acquired this from ALF when they went out of business. This is the best firetruck body in the industry. It is not just the Stainless Steel Body but also the SS pump module also. Watch the video. This plant is well known in the firetruck industry for building quality products at a very reasonable price.

The video link above is a tour of the E-ONE stainless plant in Hamburg NY. Chassis are all built in Ocala and then shipped to NY if the customer wants a stainless steel body. Otherwise all EONE products are built in Ocala.

All of E-One stainless steel rigs are built in New York, everything else in Ocala

Bill:
I believe the Ocala plant builds the chassis, drivetrain, pump modules and aluminium cabs and bodies, while the New York plant primarily builds the stainless steel bodies.

Since the CFD engines are being built in New York, I assume it is in the former Saulsbury plant that E/One acquired when they purchased Saulsbury. I was wondering if all engines are manufactured in New York now or just some as opposed to their plant in Ocala? Are they building some of the components in Florida? Are they building certain models in New York and others in Florida? What models are built in Florida as opposed to New York? If anyone is familiar with their manufacturing operations perhaps you could elucidate us on what each of the plants builds these days?
