Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

The “Pilsen Bomberos,” are a group of firefighters inspiring their Latino community on Chicago’s lower West Side. The firehouse on South Damen has a mix of rookie and veteran firefighters assigned to CFD Engine 23, and Tower Ladder 5. Many speak Spanish, like the neighborhood they serve.

Only 15% of firefighters in the United State are Latino or Hispanic, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but in Chicago, that number is slightly higher. The Chicago Fire Department said Hispanics represent 18 to 20% of firefighters and paramedics in the department.

The pride of Pilsen is inspiring younger generations of Latinos.

“I like to point out to young kids, Hispanic kids, that this is a career to consider,” Captain Mendez said. “You can help the public and it will benefit you.”

The firefighters and paramedics at the Pilsen firehouse take pride in their team, wearing these shirts that read “The Pilsen Bomberos” under their gear. It’s part of the bond they share.

The firefighters asked the department for permission to emblazon the “Pilsen Bomberos” logo on Engine 23. The decision is in the hands of Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

Romeoville Fire Department news

Excerpts from buglenewspapers.com:

The 2023 Romeoville Village Ornament has been revealed: a replica of a 1960 Seagrave pumper, the fire department’s first fire engine. Details abound on this 3-D piece, showcasing hoses in the back, pump piping and a ladder on the sides, and a silver bell on the front. Engine 1 served Romeoville from 1960-1986. Finished in rhodium silver, this brass ornament measures 3″ long, 0.75″ wide, and 1.25″ high with a 1.25″ long name oval suspended between the truck and cord. It comes in a red box with black lining and the Romeoville logo is stamped on the lid in silver. For the second year in a row, the ornaments were made in America by the same company who has handled the official White House ornaments since they began in 1981.

“This year’s ornament allows people to bring a piece of Romeoville history into their home,” said Mayor John Noak. “When you really look at the details, you can tell this is a vintage fire truck, which adds to the appeal of the ornament. We hope people are as excited about this one as we are.”

Since this year’s ornament celebrates the fire department, the first time you can buy it will be at the upcoming Fire Prevention Open House event on Saturday, October 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Fire Station 3 (698 N. Birch Lane). It will feature food, demonstrations, an obstacle course, touch-a-truck, and an appearance by Sparky! Following that, ornaments will be sold at the front desks of Village Hall (1050 W. Romeo Road) and the Recreation Center (900 W. Romeo Road) starting Monday, October 16. Ornaments will also be able to be purchased at Halloween Fest (October 20) and at the Holiday Lights Festival (December 1 & 2). They are $15 each and can only be purchased in person. There is no internet option and ornaments will not be shipped. Once ornaments are sold out, they will not be re-ordered.

This fire truck is the second ornament in the ongoing series. If you missed the first ornament, a replica of Village Hall, a limited number are still available at the front desk of Village Hall. They are $15 each.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from cbsnews.com:

For years, the CBS 2 Investigators have been reporting on slow response times by the Chicago Fire Department, and problems with collecting data. Now the city’s top watchdog says not much has changed.

In a new report released yesterday, Inspector General Deborah Witzburg’s office said the fire department has not implemented corrective actions to improve its systems.

They’ve also not hired more staff for ambulances, blaming the lack of change on the pandemic and budget shortfalls.

In 2019, CBS 2 found 19% of the ambulance responses we analyzed took longer than the department’s 6-minute commitment.

The fire department also was using an outdated system – and missing data – making it impossible to determine accurate response times.
