The Sutphen mid mount design is very similar in design and layout to their mid mount towers. Different aerial but same basic apparatus body, chassis and cab arrangement which reduces development and manufacturing costs. They have been chosen by departments who have height restrictions but don’t want a tower.
But, in recent years, they have introduced 100’ and 75’ rearmount designs.

Lombard had one very similar to Dolton’s as well.
Dennis – do you know what Pembroke did with the rig?

The CFD did have mid-mount Macks with Pirsch aerials almost identical to the Dolton rig, minus the pump. I believe there were four and the CFD also had two Seagrave mid-mounts. Mid-mount were popular in the middle to late 1960’s as a replacement for tillers. Starting in the 1970’s, everyone wanted a rear mount. An exception is Sutphen. Their mid-mounts are somewhat rare, but there are still departments that use them. Kenosha for example. Does anyone know why Sutphen mid-mounts are the exception to the rule? Reliability? Size of the rig? Just curious. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Mike this is not a Chicago rig. This is from Dolton, Illinois which they bought new and was given to Pembroke Fire, Illinois around 2010.
