From the Evanston FD Facebook page:
Our “new” used reserve engine is close to being delivered. This engine served the Lisle/Woodridge Fire District previously and will enter our reserve pool of apparatus for when our front line apparatus go out of service for repairs and maintenance.
thanks Daniel

It’s great to see the Evanston Fire Department is able to purchase a “New” used fire engine specifically as a spare reserve rig. Not only does Evanston have an impressive fleet of up to date front line apparatus but even their reserve pieces are in good shape. They have been able to wisely invest it’s Capital funds for a good fleet of apparatus (including 2 Tillered Aerials) but they have also invested money in rebuilding 3 out of 5 Stations on their former sites and they even build a new station 1 in the late 1990’s.
The main issue that I have is their operating budget.
As you know their neighbor to the north, Skokie, also has one of the Top fire departments in the Chicago Metro Area. Even though Evanston has 5 and Skokie has 3 active stations both fire departments have the same amount of active suppression apparatus on a piece for piece basis. Both Evanston and Skokie maintain 7 fire/rescue companies that are fully manned (by Cook County standards) on a 24 hour basis.
The only major difference is that while Skokie has 28 people on duty (including the watch commander) per shift, the Evanston fire department runs with only 26 people on duty per shift which forces them to run their 3rd Ambulance 23 as a Jump company with their Engine company 23 which happens to serve the heavily populated northeast side of town which includes Northwestern University , Evanston Hospital and the Central street .Greenbay road commercial area. Skokie like Evanston also has 3 frontline Ambulances however their 3rd Ambulance is always manned and doesn’t need to act a Jump company. Those 2 extra people per shift make in big difference for Skokie by allowing them to always run with 3 Ambulances.
All Evanston would need to do is increase their on duty compliment by 2 people per shift to 28 instead of 26 people on duty and they could also run with 3 full time Ambulances 24/7.
In terms of population Evanston (according to the lastest Census Estimates) for 2022 has 71,922 people while Skokie has 61,287 people which gives Evanston a slightly over 10,000 people population advantage to Skokie.
In terms of sworn personel Skokie had 115 member while Evanston has 107 sworn members of their fire department. Considering that Evanston actually had more residents than Skokie and the towns and fire departments are actually comparable in size , it is foolish at best and dangerous at worst why Evanston shouldn’t be able to ad 6 to 8 people to their fire department payroll so they could run their 3 rd Ambulance full time and not have to take Engine 23 ouf of service whenever they need a third Ambulance. Thats the main difference between those 2 otherwise very good fire departments. Skokie will always have their EMS units fully manned while Evanston will not hire those 2 extra people per shift to keep their 3 rd ambulance in full service.2

Wish they would replace the hideous looking/poor quality emergency lighting it currently has.
