Between Lisle, Darien, and Downers, they get a structure fire about once every few weeks or so. Naperville averages around 40 a year. The call volume around here is also trending upwards over the last few years.
Naperville switched around their apparatus when the new truck got delivered. They changed and engine company to a truck company, a truck company to an engine company, and an truck company to a squad company. No manpower was cut.
Lisle and Dar-wood have been sharing apparatus (among other things) since the IGA in 2016. They used to share Lisle’s reserve ladder when they had it, and they still share reserve engines when necessary. E89 was in Lisle’s reserve engine a few weeks ago.
As for Downers Grove, they got their Spartan back within the last day or two.

I’ll say one thing about this blog. Guys are passionate as hell about the local fire service. I applaud everyone here as their wish is for 4 and 5 man engine and truck companies every couple of blocks for the 6 county area. Of course this takes money and most towns/cities/villages/fire districts don’t have the money for this dream.
Being a south suburb guy and not a west suburb guy, although worked in the west suburbs, let me put something in perspective.
These west suburb apparatus issues are no doubt issues, not really “issues”. If dept. “A” doesn’t have a truck, because they sold it or it’s OOS, do they cut manpower or put those guys on a spare rig? I’m asking as I don’t know. Naperville took a truck OOS but didn’t cut their manpower? I don’t think they did. Sharing apparatus isn’t as easy as people think. It’s not like letting your brother use your car to run to Jewel (goin to the Jewels). There’s insurance issues, intergovernmental agreements, etc. What kind of “work load” is going on in the west suburbs? I’m not talking fire alarms and bull$hi$. I’m talking about dropping lines and working fires.
In the south suburbs (Harvey, Markham, Country Club Hills, South Holland, Cal City, Posen, Blue Island, Lansing), etc. We can talk about work load and 2 man fire companies and guys just taking a beating. The hose on Harvey Engine 3 never gets a chance to dry.
Many of us have worked both types of departments. Once there were so many guys on the scene there’s not enough work for everyone. Then the flip side. Two guys showing up at a ripping fire and they’re going to let God pump.
I know the demographics are not the same therefore the fire duty isn’t the same. Just something to think about.
Michael M a mid-mount normally can’t carry everything a rear-mount can as the compartment space is less and the mid-mount is always heavier.
I don’t mean to take anything away from the west suburban guys but, it all comes down to economics and nothing else.

The sharing of reserve trucks has been looked into by multiple departments in that area. It comes down to sharing of costs and legal mumbo-jumbo as to why it doesn’t work. Soon, no one will have a reserve truck. Lombard reserve tower is up for sale, that is the last reserve truck in the immediate area that I can think of. Dar-Wood L89 is still gone. I believe Downers T102 is also still using the loaner.
It sure gets interesting when a couple of aerials go OOS in the area.
Daniel, I believe the Ascendant has a very comparable storage space to the rearmount, which was one of the benefits Pierce was vocal about when this midmount was released.

Will the new truck be painted red like Engine 54, 55 Ambulance 52 and 55?

WOW!!! Lisle used to be the standard for trucks, engines, and amb. Not so much any more?? They where one of the best.

Agreed Daniel and Michael M. Regardless if LIWD or NAPR has the reserve truck(s), it would be a beneficial shared resource for 5 or 6 neighboring departments to utilize.

I am guessing once Naperville gets it’s new truck for Truck 1, they will put the 09 in reserve and get rid of the old E-One. I agree, since they have three trucks, they should not have a issue sharing one of those trucks with another community.
Why would a community want to buy a replacement vehicle that cannot carry as much equipment as the truck it is replacing?

The new tower is scheduled for delivery at the end of the year. From what I’ve heard, it will have less storage space then the current one.
How hard would it be for Lisle, Darien, and Downers Grove to share one reserve truck. None of the departments have one, and neither do a good amount of surrounding communities like Westmont and Tri-State have reserve trucks. It would at least give them something. There have been a handful of times this year where all three trucks are OOS which puts a heavier load on Lombard, Westmont, and Tri-States trucks among others. Heck maybe they could borrow one of the 3 Naperville currently has in reserve.

I wonder if the new tower will have room to carry as much equipment as this rig carries?

When will the new mid mount be delivered?

Agreed, they should at least keep this truck in reserve. Remember truck 89 had to go in for work, they were running with engine 89. Which I am guessing is the old engine 88.

So LIWD sold their reserve truck, which Evanston bought, and now the tower is up for sale. With the partial consolidation with DAR-WOOD, neither district is going to have a shared reserve truck company. Not too smart in my opinion when you already have an area short one truck company when LIWD shut their second one down. Now no reserve for either…

Only 10 years old. Oh well.
