I drove by 3 today and the new engine was in the station. Didn’t see the old seagrave engine at 1.

I was hoping/thinking they would be keeping it. Last year some time, they borrowed a Lisle-Woodridge engine for a short time. Drove by 3 today and they were in a reserve already.

I’m not sure if any rigs are being disposed of. There are two engines currently in reserve: Engine 6, a 2008 HME (Formerly Engine 2), and Engine 1, a 1989 Seagrave. Engine 1 has been mostly reserve, though I have noticed it being used frontline with Truck 1 on large calls or in place of Truck 1 on medical calls. They’ve kept the Seagrave for quite a while and I don’t know if they have plans of getting rid of it. Engine 6 seems to get quite a lot of use, usually as Quint (Engine) 4 or Engine 2, so they could need more than 1 reserve engine.

Daniel, do you know if any rigs are being disposed of with this or is just Engine 3’s HME moving to reserve?

Still looks better than the first generation QUANTUM
IMHO.

Quantams could be the ugliest rig in recent history, except for maybe the eone Daytona !?

I like your perspective Daniel.
Some do look very similar and others do try to stand out. The now defunct ALF had their EAGLE which was very easy to ID and attractive at that. The quality was lousy but that’s a separate issue. The ROSENBAUR COMMANDER has a distinct look while many SPARTAN, PIERCE and KME have very similar looks at a distance. SEAGRAVE while very angular and frankly very attractive has a smart approach to concentrate on a limited number of chassis and tout quality over quantity taking aim at PIERCE and SPARTAN which offers several chassis.
I know I may get blasted by the PIERCE stalwarts and I by no means dislike PIERCE but I always thought the original QUANTUM was ugly/scary looking. Much improved with the second generation but PIERCE isn’t the greatest as far as trying anything beyond the angular look such the DASH CF and newer SABER which look very sharp.

So I see that I’m not the only one who thinks that it’s an ugly engine, however as long as it does it’s job and performs well that’s the bottom line.

Did someone have beer goggles on when they went to spec?

I’ve never been a fan of the E-One Quest mainly because of its looks, but now that I’ve seen one in person, I don’t mind them that much. I think when they designed the Quest, they were more focused on the size of the cab and the functionality more than looks. That being said, the Pierce Dash offers nearly the same funcionality with no dog house upfront and looks considerably better then the Quest. Crabby Milton, I think you have a point that manufacturers are trying to stand out from each other since most custom chassis’ have very similar looks. I’m not very familiar with the reliability of different compainies, but I do know each company has their fair share of problems.
I feel that Pierce is for departments that want a lot of customization options for one or a few apparatus at a time, as opposed to E-One which makes ‘cookie cutter’ style trucks for larger orders such as Chicago or Boston who usually order multiple trucks at a time. That being said, Pierce does make some ‘cookie cutter’ style trucks and E-One does make some very custom trucks.
In the end it comes down to what truck and what manufacturer works the best and is the most cost effective for the departments, and different departments like different things. As long as it does what it’s supposed to and isn’t a waste of money, I’m fine with it.

SPARTAN had a cab like that at one time called the FURION I think.
They want to stand apart I guess.
People who don’t have an interest in apparatus won’t care but it does make for good debate for those that do.

it is nice while I like pierce better for looks but eone are way better as far as being more reliable

To each his own but I too prefer angular look.
Eone fans won’t care anyway and I’m sure they didn’t buy E-ONE to annoy the PIERCE fans.

That me the ugliest fire engine in the entire Chicagoland area. Should’ve stuck to the Pierce Dash CFs

Looks good.
I like how they incorporated “Bolingbrook” into the grill.
