Smoke investigation in vacant Winnetka store, 2-6-16

The Winnetka Fire Department was called for a report of smoke from a vacant building at 1075 Gage Street in Hubbard Woods on Saturday afternoon (2/6/16). Upon arrival, a light haze was visible in the corner unit of a block-long building with apartments over stores. This is one of the oldest sections of town and which has been know for several substantial fires in years past, so the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for a working fire. After a thorough search, the origin went undetected and companies were returned.

On a historical note, this vacant storefront was formerly a drug store and was used for a scene in the original Home Alone movie.

Code 4 fire in Wilmette, 5-28-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Wilmette firefighters were called to 506 5th Street Friday afternoon (5/28/15) by a resident that had smoke in their 2nd floor apartment. Companies arrived and found a small fire in the basement that was traveling up the pipe chase to the fourth floor.

The alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire bringing units from Skokie, Winnetka, Glenview, Glencoe, Northbrook, and Evanston as they opened walls on all floors to get at the fire.

Lightning strike in Glenview, 8-25-14

Images from Larry Shapiro of companies working at 4177 Midway Lane in Glenview (8/25) after lightning struck a house during one of several rounds of violent storms that passed through the area. Heavy smoke on arrival prompted an upgrade to a working fire response which brought Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, and Wilmette units to supplement all of the Glenview companies.

Morton Grove Quint 4 was on the road when the call came in, so instead of going back to quarters and jumping to Squad 4 (which was due) they were told to go right to the scene. Ambulance 4 also came to bring the crew strength to five.
