When I retired as Chief a few years ago, the roof siren was wired so it could be activated manually in the event of severe weather and no longer activated for calls.

I live approximately 18300 s. Cicero, and last summer on a still night I swear I could hear Garden Homes’ roof siren. It was coming from due north, and Garden homes is the only dept that way that still blows the siren. I can always hear East Hazel Crest’s but that’s to the NE.

I spent 25 years with the GHFPD….took in my first fire with them on that rig.

Thank you, yes I do. I have others from Garden Homes and surrounding communities from the 1970’s.

Interesting looking old rig. I’m sure if they still had that today, they could have stuck a bigger V8 or V10 gasoline or that new CUMMINS ISV both with automatic then it would really fly.

Mike, do you have any other old pictures of Garden Homes? They had some pretty cool rigs back in the day.

Whatever gets the job done. For its day it was probably cutting edge. Only draw back would be that of response time as it doesn’t look like a screamer.
