Smoke investigation in vacant Winnetka store, 2-6-16

The Winnetka Fire Department was called for a report of smoke from a vacant building at 1075 Gage Street in Hubbard Woods on Saturday afternoon (2/6/16). Upon arrival, a light haze was visible in the corner unit of a block-long building with apartments over stores. This is one of the oldest sections of town and which has been know for several substantial fires in years past, so the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for a working fire. After a thorough search, the origin went undetected and companies were returned.

On a historical note, this vacant storefront was formerly a drug store and was used for a scene in the original Home Alone movie.

Chicago FD names new deputy commissioner

Excerpts from theChicagoTribune.com:

The Chicago Fire Department has tapped a veteran firefighter to fill the agency’s No. 2 job. Ford, a 30-year veteran rose through the ranks from firefighter to training director and then head of the Fire Prevention Bureau.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Richard C. Ford II (Chicago Fire Department)

Deputy Fire Commissioner Richard C. Ford II (Chicago Fire Department)

Richard Ford II, a Chatham native who lives on the city’s far south side, takes over as the first deputy commissioner. Ford will handle day-to-day operations of the department, according to a department news release. He will also assist with the anticipated hiring of hundreds of new recruits who recently passed the department’s exam.

Ford takes the job amid ongoing criticism over the department’s lack of diversity within its ranks. As of last month, one African-American and one Hispanic firefighter were employed by the department for every four white firefighters, according to staffing figures provided last month by agency spokesman Larry Langford who said the  department employs nearly 4,800 firefighters.

Those numbers have drawn criticism from some current firefighters and high-ranking retirees from the department. Last month, they joined members of the African-American Firefighters & Paramedics League of Chicago in calling on the U.S. Justice Department to step in and probe the department’s hiring practices, along with disciplinary decisions that they allege demonstrate a pattern of discrimination.

New aerial for Dekalb

From ProudlyDekalb.com:

The new aerial ladder truck just came back from being detailed with the City of DeKalb colors and logos.  A new feature on the design is the #proudlydekalb logo.  DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks stated, “The DeKalb Fire Department is an active supporter within the community from emergency response to community service. Because we believe DeKalb is “America’s Best City” we have prominently displayed #proudlydekalb on our new ladder truck.”

The new aerial ladder truck was purchased from a department in Florida with financial assistance from Northern Illinois University.  The new truck cost $420,000 with $275,000 coming from NIU.  This new addition to the DeKalb Fire Department is another example of the City of DeKalb and Northern Illinois University working together for the good of the community.

“With the residence towers and other high-rise buildings, you need something like that in the unlikely event of a fire,” NIU spokesman Paul Palian said. “Not only to put out a fire, but perhaps a rescue.”

Because DeKalb’s aerial ladder truck is the only means in the immediate area for firefighters to battle fires from above the truck appears at all fires in the city and many of them in cities such as Sycamore, Genoa or Malta.

After almost 26 years of service the previous aerial ladder truck “Big John” was ready to be retired after responding to more than 2,000 fires.  The truck, which was custom built for the city in 1989, was named after captain John Isom, who died of cancer the year the truck was delivered.
