House fire in Wheeling, 2-18-16

This from Larry Shapiro:

Wheeling firefighters were called just before 4pm to 195 Cindy Lane for a report of smoke in the house. Within minutes the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire when police arrived and reported that the house was fully involved. Two residents that had gotten out of the house were transported to Northwest Community Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The size up from Wheeling Engine 23, the first fire unit on the scene was fire visible through the roof of the single-family home. Companies made an aggressive interior attack with fire in the attic and the second floor. The homeowner was reportedly doing some plumbing and sweating pipes when the fire broke out.

Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, and Mount Prospect units assisted the Wheeling companies.

Elmhurst fire chief retires

Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com:

After 31 years of service in the Elmhurst Fire Department, Chief Jeff Bacidore celebrated his retirement at a party attended by more than 200 people. Bacidore’s last day as an Elmhurst firefighter was Feb. 5, the same day friends, family and colleagues gathered at the American Legion to express their gratitude for his more than three decades of service.

According to Bacidore, he retired to take a position as a risk management consultant with a company in St. Charles.

Bacidore began his career in 1980 as a paid on-call firefighter in LaSalle. Five years later he was hired by the Elmhurst Fire Department. By June 1995, Bacidore was promoted to lieutenant, and three years later he was made battalion chief. In 2002, he was appointed deputy fire chief. A decade later, and almost exactly 27 years after becoming an Elmhurst firefighter, Bacidore was named fire chief.

He said that he will never forget the dedication and caring of the people of Elmhurst.

The city now is faced with the task of replacing Bacidore. On Feb. 1, the City Council approved the hiring of Deputy Fire Chief William Anaszewicz as interim fire chief while they vet internal and external candidates for fire chief, Grabowski said.

3-Alarm fire in Coal City, 2-16-16

Excerpts from theHeraldNews.com:

Coal City building burns 2-16-16

Firefighters responded Tuesday to a commercial structure fire in Coal City. Coal City Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched about 11:09 a.m. to 35 S. Broadway St., according to Lt. Nick Doerfler who said there were three people treated on scene for minor injuries.

The building where the fire occurred houses a hair salon, and pool supply store with some vacant spaces on the ground floor, and apartments on the second floor. It was occupied when the blaze began on the second floor near the front of the structure.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and likely will remain so for several weeks.

Richard Dean, who lived in the six-apartment building, said the fire started in the front of the building and spread to the back. Dean said his neighbors in told him they heard a boom and suddenly there was a fire.

Fighting the fire consumed most of Coal City’s water supply, Doerfler said, so agencies tapped into Braidwood’s supply through a well. The well water did not enter Coal City’s regular water supply.
