Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:
A blaze at a vacant South Side warehouse that left firefighter Daniel Capuano dead in December was set off by a construction worker using an arc welder that touched off insulation and deemed accidental, the Chicago Fire Department announced Wednesday.
Daniel Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the department, was killed while battling a blaze at a vacant warehouse at 9213 S. Baltimore Av. on Dec. 14.
Capuano, who was assigned to Tower Ladder 34, was searching through heavy smoke on the second floor when he fell down an elevator shaft and into the basement in the three-story warehouse.
The city’s Department of Buildings said after the blaze that unauthorized work was being performed at the warehouse. Work being conducted without a permit included complete removal of the elevator and other structural alterations, spokeswoman Mimi Simon said.
On Dec. 15, building inspectors dropped multiple code violations on the owner of the building and city attorneys moved to have the building torn down.

Niles companies response to an apartment fire this morning at 9701 Dee Road. Arriving units found fire blowing out a 5th floor balcony and heavy smoke out a side window of a corner unit. The Alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire and then to a Box Alarm. As crews made searches and found multiple occupants in the building an EMS Box Alarm was struck as a precaution. The fire was contained in short order and was held to the unit of origin plus the hallway. Several residents that were unable to self evacuate were held in place within their apartments.
Three aerials were setup around the building and Niles Engine 2 had a line charging the standpipe system.

This from Steve Redick:
Monday, at 14th just east of Laramie. Extreme cold conditions as well as falling snow. A very large frame-dwelling with a good volume of fire on the 2nd floor when the companies arrived. Apparently this building has been remodeled several times over the years making for very difficult firefighting conditions as the fire had spread to concealed spaces and voids. I arrived just as they were attempting to complete vertical ventilation as the fire rapidly advanced in the attic space. Eventually three aerial pipes and several handlines were operated. This was a rough job under some tough conditions.
