Excerpts from WLSTVChicago.com:

A protest in Chicago ended in several arrests as police leaders from around the world gathered Saturday at McCormick Place for an annual conference. Demonstrators are demanding racial justice.

Dozens of people were arrested as a result of the protests, most of them from a sit-in in the middle of the street. Their goal was to disrupt the largest gathering of public safety officials of its kind.

Several hundred protesters marched from Chicago Police headquarters at 35th and Michigan to McCormick Place Saturday afternoon, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police gathered this weekend. The conference is the largest of its kind nationwide, with over 14,000 public safety officers in attendance. The protest was organized by community organizations calling on police departments nationwide to change the way they engage with communities of color.

“What we’re looking for today is to have our voices heard, to show the coalition of voices, to show that black lives matter, to make our voices heard to this very powerful organization that sets policies,” said protester Maria Hadden. “We want less money for policing and more money for community services.”

A sit-in was also staged by another group, blocking the road at Cermak and Indiana. Police eventually arrested about a dozen protesters after police say they would not get up.

Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District news

Excerpts from TheDailyHerald.com:

As the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District marches toward another try at a tax increase, James Gaffney has resigned as president of the district’s board of trustees.

Gaffney confirmed Friday he resigned as president of the fire district earlier this week. He is also a member of the St. Charles Unit District 303 school board, a role that’s eating up more and more of his time. Gaffney will remain on the board but play a lesser role in several big decisions the district will make in the next few months.

Fire district officials are picking through the remains of a failed tax hike request by referendum in April. The move would have increased the taxes paid to the fire district by the owner of a $100,000 home by $48 a year. But that increase would have been phased in over five years. Voters rejected the request by about a 3-to-1 margin.

As trustees prepare to take a second shot at a tax increase, the atmosphere surrounding the question is looking more dire. The finances for the district appear to be reaching a crisis stage. District trustees are set to discuss the possible future discontinuation of ambulance and emergency medical services.

Trustees will elect a new president and discuss the referendum and ambulance service at a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at fire state No. 3, 34W500 Carl Lee Road, near St. Charles.

Dog rushes into burning home to rescue resident

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Sara Domaradzki had just escaped her family’s burning two-flat in Portage Park early Tuesday when her dog Bambi scrambled out of her arms and raced back into the flames.

Her family believes the 4-year-old terrier-Labrador mix knew Domaradzki’s 69-year-old father was still in the home and went back after him.

“She ran back into the house to find (Sara’s) dad, and then they both got stuck there,” said Domaradzki’s boyfriend, Alessandro Mininni.

Firefighters arrived at the home on the 5100 block of West Grace Street around 1:30 a.m. and carried out Peter Domaradzki, who did not have any vital signs. Paramedics worked on him as he lay on the sidewalk and were able to revive him, and he was in critical condition as he was taken to a hospital.

Then they came out with Bambi, who was struggling for breath, legs stiff, as Fire Lt. Gilbert Acevedo cradled her.

“It looked limp,” said firefighter Mike Strachan, who grabbed Bambi from Acevedo and carried her up Laramie Avenue to the back of Engine 94, where he put a small air mask over her face. Bambi’s eyes were wide, and the mask steamed up whenever she exhaled.

At first Andrade and Strachan were the only two working on the dog, but as other firefighters and paramedics walked by, one draped a blanket over the dog and others tried to find extra air tanks. Bambi’s tail tapped the ground every few seconds. Paramedics brought another bottle of air.

Mininni said Domaradzki was found under a bed and believes Bambi was found nearby. Domaradzki was a member of the Polish Solidarity movement and is a long time editor for the Polish Daily News, according to his family.

While the dog belongs to Sara, her dad and Bambi have developed a close bond over the years. The two would go for walks and hang out together in the home the family has owned for decades.

He said his girlfriend’s father remained in critical condition at Loyola University medical center.  Bambi remained in the animal hospital and may suffer some complications, Mininni said.

Box Alarm in Harvey, 10-24-15

This from Eric Haak:

Just a short video to show the wind conditions faced by the Harvey Fire Department on October 24, 2015. Most efforts were spent successfully protecting occupied exposures. Clearly I am not a professional videographer. I know the white balance is incorrect and that the video shakes from time to time.

Chicago Engine 78

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Hours before Game 3 of the National League Championship Series, Cubs fans flooded West Waveland Avenue and every few minutes, like clockwork, one would stop and ask to take pictures at the historic firehouse that sits just outside Wrigley Field.

The two-story structure, built in 1915, is home to the firefighters of Engine Co. 78 and the paramedics and EMTs of Ambulance Co. 6, who’ve become nearly synonymous with the team and accustomed to Cubs fans of various sobriety levels.

“It’s probably the most famous firehouse in the country, if not the world,” said firefighter Bob King, who has worked at the Wrigleyville firehouse for nearly 24 years. “There was a guy earlier from Dallas came up to us and said ‘I’ve seen you guys on TV my whole life and I came up and I wanted to walk into the firehouse I’ve always seen on WGN.’ He shakes our hands and thanked us for what we do.”

Moments after King recounted that story, Kenny Fell and his grandson Colby Capedville, of New Orleans, walked up and asked to take a picture.

“My friend was a firefighter and used to take a month each year to follow the Cubs around in his truck. This is for him,” Fell said about the man who died responding to a scene in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Fans casually strolled into the station to take pictures of the Cubs logo fixed on the grill of the firetruck or the mural of Wrigley Field on the back wall. Even firefighter Alan Negron, who’s been featured in the TV show “Chicago Fire,” said the Wrigleyville firehouse gets much more attention than the film set.

And the logo is not the only baseball-themed artwork inside the firehouse. About a month ago, Negron designed a patch and T-shirt for Engine Co. 78, which features the number 78 on a baseball inside a Maltese cross and flanked by two bats.

Cubs fans and firefighters from all over the world have stopped by to buy merchandise.

A New York City firehouse, Engine Co. 274, called to make a friendly wager on the Cubs-Mets series. If the Cubs win, the firehouse expects to get 25 FDNY T-shirts from the New York company, and vice versa, if the Cubs lose.

The firehouse is home to die-hard Cubs fans. One firefighter who recently retired got a Cubs World Series tattoo a few seasons ago, King said. Unfortunately, that year the Cubs missed the playoffs by a long shot.

A photo on the back wall shows firefighters holding a banner that reads “The Official Firehouse of the 1984 World Series.”

Though the firefighters were hopeful, the Cubs were stopped just short of a World Series that year, losing to the San Diego Padres 3-2 in the NLCS.

thanks Dan

A request for patches

Can you forward this to all of the districts ? I can’t find a contact list.

My 3 year old son Hunter has had 2 major back surgeries this year. He had double fusion surgery on his back to fix a problem from birth.

My local fire department has been amazing setting up special events for Hunter and doing some pretty incredible things with him. We all have the utmost respect for Police and Fire departments.

Something I’d like to do for Hunter is make a huge frame with patches from fire departments from all over the USA. I was wondering if it is possible to send him one from your city? Or if you can also get any cities around you? We spend a lot of time in Chicago and I have seen a lot of really cool patches for the Chicago land area.

If not that is OK, please do not feel obligated to do so.

We appreciate your service.

Thank you
