Fox Lake FPD to seek tax increase

From the Northwest Herald:

For the first time in 37 years, the Fox Lake Fire Protection District is asking residents to increase its taxing authority.

The fire protection district, which covers parts of McHenry, Lakemoor and Spring Grove, is looking to increase its taxing rate from 0.133 to 0.350 through a referendum on the April ballot. The potential increase would generate between $800,000 and $900,000 more for the district, Chief Ron Hoehne said.

Hoehne said the increase would go toward hiring more personnel and replacing outdated ambulances. He said the district had to take out low-interest, five-year loans for the last two ambulance purchases and staffing has hit dangerously low levels with only two personnel at Station No. 3 and Station No. 4 at times.

The increase would mean about a $72 increase for every $100,000 of equalized assessed home value, Hoehne said.  Failing to pass the referendum could have dire consequences, Hoehne said, especially with the lack of qualified part-time volunteer workers, who have greatly decreased in numbers over the years.

“We’ll be having to look at layoffs or closing stations and that’s what we don’t want to do,” Hoehne said. “We have too large of an area we have to cover, from the Wisconsin border to Route 120.”

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 12-31-14 (more)

More on the 2-11 Alarm fire at 10 E. Cermak (12-31-14) from Steve Redick:

The fire apparently originated in the kitchen area of a restaurant and spread into the ductwork and in an inaccessible cockloft area. This became an external operation relatively quickly. 2 tower ladders, a Snorkel and a few handlines operated in what turned into a several hour operation in single digit temps. There were several occupancies involved and the elevated CTA staiton and tracks were right adjacent to the rear of the fire building. The transit operation was shut down and the newly remodeled station looked like it got smoked up pretty good. A very large billboard sign was also a major collapse concern throughout the operation as the anchor and support for the sign was attached to the roof of the fire building.

0900hrs-1700hrs

Much like combat, the fire ground demands that firefighters and fire officers function effectively under fire. This presentation challenges the fallacies promoted by the “culture of safety” and introduces a more appropriate paradigm for fire ground operations, the “culture of survival, discipline and leadership”. The paradigm functions to save the lives of firefighters while enabling the fire service to maximize its ability to protect the public. This presentation examines mental, physical and technical themes that have fostered a culture of survival and discipline on the battlefield and the fire ground.

The event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn at 1818 Maple Street in Evanston on 2/2/15. The time will be 9am-5pmCost will be only $80.00 for registration before 1/26/15 and $100.00 after. Cost will include continental breakfast and afternoon refreshments and snacks.

5-11 Club Support Services

The Chicago SunTimes has an article on the 5-11 Club Canteen Service

As water misted off firehoses, splashed from puddles and froze on the gear of firefighters early Wednesday at an extra-alarm blaze in the South Loop, Russell Harmon stood by with a steaming pot of coffee. Harmon, 58, got a page about 3:30 a.m. and left his West Loop home minutes later. He’s part of the 5-11 Club, a group of volunteers who show up to major fires to hand out coffee and hot chocolate to firefighters and other emergency personnel.  Four 5-11 Club volunteers arrived in one of the group’s two trucks, which are stored at Chicago firehouses. In the summer, they hand out cold drinks. The club derives its name from the call sign reserved for the most severe fires. They will arrive at all fires that are 2-11 and above.

The temperature hovered at 7 degrees with subzero wind chills.

“We went through four pots of coffee and a couple hundred cups of hot chocolate pretty quick,” Harmon said.

“We pulled up and there were 30 guys waiting for something warm,” said Jim Mitidiero, a fellow volunteer. “A lot of these guys have icicles on their gear … by the time we got there, they’d been fighting the fire for more than an hour,” Mitidero said.

“I tell people people, ‘The colder it gets, the better my coffee and hot chocolate tastes,” joked Mitidiero, a retired Chicago police officer.

“You hand them something warm, and they’re very, very thankful. But we just want to say thank you to them for putting their lives on the line, so it’s weird to hear them say thanks,” said Harmon, a retired CTA switchman.

There are about 50 volunteers from all walks of life in the group, but only 10 who regularly operate the trucks, more commonly known as canteens.

… the truck, in a previous life, was used by the fire department’s scuba team.
