One person is dead following an accident this morning on southbound I-57 that shut down all lanes at 159th Street in Markham, said police.
The fatal accident happened shortly before 9:30 a.m. just north of 159th Street, according to Illinois State Police.
According to preliminary information, a dump truck appeared to have rolled over after striking the left side concrete median barrier, according to Monique Bond, spokeswoman for the state police.
Soon after, the truck became engulfed in flames and the driver was unable to escape, said Bond who reported that the driver has been identified as 75-year-old Napoleon Brewer.
About 11:30 a.m., the trooper said all southbound lanes had been shut down. Those lanes were re-opened shortly before 3 p.m., as a significant amount of gravel had spilled across the southbound lanes, Bond said.
