This from Tom Podraza
This was posted to a Police car group I belong to also..Doug, who works at an auto salvage yard in Aurora was contacted by Bellwood FD about disposing of the truck.“We got a call at the yard today – Bellwood FD is looking to sell / scrap one of their trucks. Too big for us to process but I got the info in hopes someone would want to save it. This is a fully operational unit; they just received a grant for a new one. It needs to be gone in 3-4 weeks, but they may be able to work short term storage with a buyer.1986 Grumman ladder truck with a 102 foot ladder and 1500 gpm pump.
They’ve been quoted $6K-$8k scrap value, but can’t find anyone who can take it.I was told it can go to anyone, but not back into fire service. Not sure why. May be a condition of the grant?”

I’m assuming that Broadview is running with older equipment because of lack of funds. They did village wide layoffs a few years back, so I’m sure they still don’t have the funds for new equipment yet. Seems to be the common thing lately, you don’t have the funds to buy anything unless you are fortunate enough to be awarded a grant.

Broadview is broke.

Because there is very little money in Broadview to buy new equipment! Buy new equipment or keep the 4 remaining members per shift on duty and paid??? HMMMM!!!!
The history for those that don’t know, many years ago Broadview ran anywhere from 8 to 12 per shift. Then about a dozen employees where laid off, shifts went down to 4 total. There are no call backs when the ambulance is out, 2 left for the engine. Slowly they did rehire the laid off members as retirements came, but still 4 on duty a day.

We are getting great use of the Hillside aerial at NIPSTA. It is the perfect tower ladder for our candidates. Thanks to Chief Gaertner at Broadview for working with Chief Kuryla at Hillside to arrange its purchase. If the Bellwood aerial was a straight stick and not a tower we would probably look to acquire it too.

Sell it to Broadview for a dollar !!

Nice old rig…it would be a shame to see the old girl scrapped. There’s got to be a collector somewhere who’d be interested.

It is indeed a condition of the grant. If you deem it unsafe (open cab, lap belts…) in the grant and say the word “unsafe”, you can’t sell it for emergency use, sell it overseas, and can’t trade it in. Thats what we did at Hillside last year, but we were fortunate enough to sell it to NIPSTA for their training use.

If I had the money, I would have taken it and started my fire truck collection early.
