Fire Department “Centennial Open House”

8360 W. Dempster Street

Saturday, June 9, 2012

11:00 am to 3:00 pm

The Niles Fire Department is hosting a Centennial Open House celebration to commemorate 100 years of providing fire protection to the citizens of Niles. There will be a variety of family-friendly activities and demonstrations.

On February 19, 1912, the State of Illinois chartered the Niles Volunteer Company.  The department functioned on a volunteer basis until 1953. Records indicate that the department averaged 450 calls in the late 1950s into the early 1960s. Today, calls average over 6,000 annually.

The unique abilities of the Niles Fire Department firefighters will be showcased during the Open House. The public is invited to view auto extrication, a rappelling demonstration and a live burn showing the benefits of a home sprinkler system. Children can participate in an “Injury Prevention Booth” sponsored by Lutheran GeneralHospital, a children’s “firefighter challenge,” as well as other activities. A hot dog lunch will be provided while supplies last, along with Baskin & Robbins ice cream being sold for 31 cents a scoop to benefit the Niles Fire Department Explorer Post 28.

Parking for this event can be found at the following locations: the east lot of the Iceland Ice Rink, Northridge Preparatory located at 8320 W. Ballard, and CitiBank located at 8400 W. Dempster after 1:00 p.m.

Please join us on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, as we pay tribute to the past, recognize the present, and embrace the future.
