This from Larry Shapiro:
Schaumburg firefighters were called to 1015 Newport Harbor this afternoon (10/2/16) after multiple callers reported a fire. Callers stated that an elderly resident was trapped on a second floor balcony on the east side of the four-unit, two-story building. First arriving companies reported smoke from the attic.
Schaumburg Battalion 5 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire and requested a second truck and two additional ambulances after receiving reports of a second victim. Squad 55 was the first-in engine and initiated fire attack encountering high heat and zero visibility with hoarder conditions within the second floor unit. Truck 53 made the rescue off the balcony, reportedly carrying the elderly resident down a ground ladder.
The fire was in a rear bedroom with fire blowing into the hallway and running the entire attic space. The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes though companies were at the scene for roughly 90 minutes. There was no extension to neighboring units. The resident was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.
