House fire in Deerfield, 5-22-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Deerfield-Bannockburn firefighters were called for a house fire around noon on Friday (5/22/15) at 818 Forest Avenue. The alarm was upgraded by RED Center prior to companies arriving on-scene based on a report from police officers of smoke showing. They had fire on the first floor with smoke throughout of an older, two-story, frame house. Two lines were used and the bulk of the fire was knocked down within 10 minutes.

Units at the scene included Deerfield Engine 19 & 20, Ambulance 19, Truck 20, Battalion 20 and the chief officers plus Truck and Battalion 33 from Highland Park, Engine and Ambulance 52 from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Battalion 11 and Engine 10 from Northbrook, Morton Grove Squad 4, and Lake Forest Truck 421.

Here are some shots from the scene. I arrived about 15 minutes after the original dispatch.

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

A Deerfield family survived a house fire unharmed Friday, after one family member smelled smoke, got everyone out of the house and called the fire department. The fire damage to the house, in the 800 block of Forest Avenue, was contained to one room because the door to that room was shut.

Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Ray Larson said “There were people in the home including children.  The person smelled smoke, evacuated the people and called 911. That closed door was a huge factor preventing the spread of the fire. They didn’t try to open it. They just got out and called 911.”

When firefighters arrived at the two-story home, they entered through the front door, went into the room where the fire was burning and extinguished it with a hose, according to Larson. That was the only room to sustain fire damage, though smoke permeated throughout.

Lightning strike in Glenview, 8-25-14

Images from Larry Shapiro of companies working at 4177 Midway Lane in Glenview (8/25) after lightning struck a house during one of several rounds of violent storms that passed through the area. Heavy smoke on arrival prompted an upgrade to a working fire response which brought Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, and Wilmette units to supplement all of the Glenview companies.

Morton Grove Quint 4 was on the road when the call came in, so instead of going back to quarters and jumping to Squad 4 (which was due) they were told to go right to the scene. Ambulance 4 also came to bring the crew strength to five.

Box Alarm in Lake Zurich 3-24-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Lake Zurich Fire Department received a call just after 5PM on Monday about a fire at Midwest Motors at 540 Cortland Drive. The first engine reported light smoke coming from the eaves. As the smoke grew in intensity, the alarm was quickly upgraded to a Box Alarm. The strip center building was home to a large indoor showroom of high end and exotic used cars.

The fire was on the second floor and in the attic at the southern end of the sprinklered building. Companies held the fire to that portion of the building although there was extensive water damage throughout. Although some cars were damaged, the majority were removed from the building.

Companies at the scene with engines were Lake Zurich (4), Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Fox River Grove, and Barrington Countryside. Trucks were from Wauconda and Arlington Heights , squads from Long Grove and Deerfield, ambulances from Barrington, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Libertyville, and chief officers from Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Fox River Grove, Long Grove, and Buffalo Grove.
